Well.. its pretty much all over. You have get away from the big commercial streets and on to some of the side streets. There are some on JiaoZhou Lu north of JingAn Temple. Some on Panyu Lu a few block off of YanAn Lu. Some streets east of People square and south of Nanjing have strips of street food places. One of the best baozi places is on the corner of YanAn Lu and WuYi lu. I am sure there are dozen more.. just look for local dense residential areas.

I was walking around Suzhou Creek yesterday and found many many food stalls on JianXi Lu. It's near the Qipu market, I think it's been there for a while, but it seems busier and more food selection than what WuJiang Lu used to offer.

I don't get the endless fascination with Shanghai's lousy street food.

Are you taking exception to street food in general, or Shanghai street food in particular?

I tend to find street food in China pretty good, especially if you're looking for more of a snack. Food in general in Shanghai tends to be pretty poor though, at least compared to most other places I've been to in China.

Street food in Shanghai.....

Tough to find a good area and food here.
Easy in many other places in China and Asia

There's a famous "snack street" with lots of stalls selling good street food. I haven't been there since I first arrived in Shanghai.... I believe it's right outside the Nanjing Dong Lu metro stop .... Jiangxi lu (can someone confirm the street name?).

Or there's another one outside the Nanjing Xi Lu exit, Wujiang Lu - but you're mostly limited to rouchuanr (meat on a stick) and the famous guotie (potsticker) place.

I think the street you're referring to is Yunnan Lu near Yanan Dong Lu. There are a couple of Muslim and Chinese restaurants there. Not far on Zhejiang lU/Guangdong Lu there is more of a street scene too with more Muslim restaurants...avoid the Malaysian Muslim restaurant...terrible food and service.

It is Jiangxi Lu, see my post above, right around the corner from Qipu market. I walked by it last Sunday.
