I agree that Walmart is terrible. however best buy is a great addition.
I would be amazed if people were not excited by M&S opening. We can buy products that are guaranteed to be of a high quality or you get your money back. Novile concept for Shanghai.
Also we can purchase food stuffs that are not contaminated and wine at very comparible price and quality to the UK.
My only critism is the cafe and the dazed look on the servers face when you ask for a product. |

No need to wait till Sunday I went to the first one last month. If you're in to that it's okay. Not many people dressed up though so mostly the staff were the ones in costume. |

I am not sure that her indoors would approve, or I might be worried that she would enjoy it too much.
The pictures made it look like more of a laugh than anything else.
Going a bit off the thread though.
I suspect that M&S is not the best place to buy gear for a S&M party, but you never know. |

Sounds like a hoot - I can bring the raspberry dessert sauce - one of Mark and Spencer's finest sauces!
well I was actually in M&S earlier on tonight and hoping to to score some dark chocolate to neutralise the toxins of this lovely city but again the cupboard was bare. They have a sign up apologising for the short supply and that they were "flying"more stock over ASAP. I guess they don't want to be know as the store that can't manage to meet demand. Ironic that a british store would have a problem with central control and distribution. |

was in M&S yesterday, and their stocks are still quite depleted. They have sectioned off an alcove where the shelves are empty - hopefully they can their act together soon. |

Some empty shelves when I visited last week, so they're doing something right.
Random comments...
Although most customers were Chinese or apparently so, there was a significant fraction of Caucasians.
The menswear section was useful and reasonably priced, given that there is a level of guaranteed quality, certainly cheaper than famous brands in Shanghai. There was underwear in L and even XL sizes, something that I normally bring from the UK. I forgot to check shoes, another perennial issue here for size.
I bought some wine but it was disappointing, bland port, almost tasteless sherry, and three red wines, Australian, Chilean and Spanish, which were nothing special.
The rest of the food section seems to be for for homesick Brits craving comfort food, including Anglicized versions of, for instance, Indian curry sauces. I doubt that others would be interested.
The guard rails on the escalators are at standard height, above waist height and centre of gravity for even a very tall person. I cannot see how someone could fall out unless they monkey around. |

Yeah but no chocolate digestives. And no salt/vinegar chips.
Some jerk(s) bought out the entire supply of this lovely kiwi Sauvignon Blanc. Leave my wine alone! Surely there must be other drinkable plonk below RM80 per bottle in this town. |

Yeah, very shoddy safety precautions in M&S- not up to the usual Chinese standards.

Apparently sold double their expectations in the first week.
They have new stock in customs that will be available thursday. |

I just awoke from a horrible nightmare. I was queuing outside M&S on this coming Thursday morning with a crowd of laowai. When the doors opened, there was a mad rush for the escalators. It was mass carnage, bodies crushed underneath and being flipped out of the escalators on all sides. Four floors of hell we ascended like a marauding army, some wearing Viking helmets and armour. It was survival of the fittest, only the strongest or luckiest reaching the food floor for the final vicious showdown over the Jaffa cakes. |

Finally made it to M&S at the weekend and spoke to one of the British food managers - apparently they have had hundreds of lines of food stock stuck in customs in China for weeks and they can't get them to clear it - he said they were supposed to have 1000 food lines and currently have less than 400. I think they were doing a pretty good job if that's the case! the bakery was fab.... shame about the cafe - nice decor etc but the grand total of two sandwiches, one cake and a watery soup on offer - not good. The wine selection is great mmmmm Chablis!
I even managed to buy size 42 knee high boots which is a miracle in Britain let alone Shanghai.
The only disappointing thing was the underwear not coming in anything over a D (and most ranges only up to C) - I talked to a manager in that department too and they are looking at being able to order things in specifically in bigger sizes - she took my details and said they'd be in contact when they had any progess - and there were a lot of names and numbers written in the book so I don't think i'm alone! might not come to anything but fingers crossed! |

They need to pay the bribes on time for getting things through customs, tut tut hope they don't start getting righteous on us now! like Ikea who wouldn't pay and had an entire container load dumped into the sea(allegedly) |

I for one will now rest easier knowing that our diligent government servants are inspecting every delicious morsel of these suspect food items, risking their health for the good of Chinakind. If they keep them long enough...they may actually find expired or otherwise unfit items which can justify their valued work. |
