In some malls there's a 100 meter gap because the up escalator is in a totally opposite end to the down escalator. What a bizarre reason for the police to quote. Oh hang on, it's the Shanghai police, so I guess it's not too surprising. |

This is very Bizare have been in Marks a few times, and the escalators are, well escalators. You get on you go up or down you get off, simple its not like you have to abseil between floors. The guy must have been leaning over quite a bit too fall, must feel for his missus or friends though, imagine that happening to someone you know and having to contend with the throngs of people gathering around for a good old look see.
I helped a girl in the Science museum copy market once who fell out of the little loft and knocked herself out, nobody did diddly just stood there staring, anyway did my first aid bit and had to tell a crowd of about 50 that were surrounding her to f*** off and give her some room. |

M&S only sell their own label products, no other brands but they're usually fairly close to the branded versions, so I guess it'll be fine. Their Jaffa cakes are very close to the McVities version. I have 5 packets! |

wow, that is really tragic. I wonder are chinese handrails at the same height as handrails in Europe and US? Living as a left handed person in a right-handed world can be bothersome or having a boosom that is bigger than a c cup or a shoe size that is bigger than US12 is a pain.
Indeed, one size doesn't fit all and some sizing problems can be fatal!
Maybe they could place all the toilet rolls they are selling at the bottom of the atrium so the fall of the next victim can be broken instead of his neck. |

I left a few packets on the shelf, I don't know why. But on Sunday there were none left at all. Let's hope there's a new batch soon. Or give me your address, I will courier over ONE jaffa cake (not a whole pack though!). |

If you make it half a pack I'll pay for half the courier.
Seriously, If you see them in M&S next time you're there grab me a six pack and I'll buy you a beer when I come to collect them. |

It reflects badly on me but I paid no attention to the price, but then I'm from down south. The courier fee is 5 RMB are you sure you can cover half of that?
I've decided to auction the remaining 4 packs on eBay .... good luck. |

yes a bit harsh - he must have arrived after all the Jaffa cakes were gone! I was there on opening day and there should have been more of a party atmosphere but it was a bit dead -that is M&S for you. A boring shop in UK is only a slightly interesting one here and that'sonly because of the novelty factor |

Yeah it's like Clarks shoes. In England it's for old men, but here it's positioned as fashionable. |

Agree with you Chingi, I guess the fact that guy has been here a few months didnt help, interesting to see his comments in a few years and his perception may change.
Mind you looking at the photo looks a right toffee nosed knob, Probably thinks "all these chinese fellows shouldnt be shopping in M&S, this is a British store for British people, there's nothing for you here"
Also agree that in the UK i definately wouldnt been seen dead in M&S except for the sandwiches, but needs must i suppose here. |

LOL, I am glad you said it and not me. I didn't think it was that bad at all and was just happy to get a few tastes from back home. It's great to know I won't need to stuff my suitcase full of tea bags this Christmas when I go home. |

I know that it is sometimes awfully hard for us to fathom but they didn't actually build and open M&S with us in mind.
Given that Shanghai's population is 20mil, take or leave a mil, when folk back in the UK were drawing up a market plan, I think our numbers were rather inconsequential.
Having said that, I'm sure a few emails to them may produce a few more products on shelves and larger sized bras. They would do a great trade here with western sized underwear which doesn't exist anywhere else!

I have been to the M&S on Queen's Rd Central in HK a few times, and the food is not good. I recall loading up on crisps and snacks that cost more than they did in the UK. They tasted pretty stale when I munched into them. When I looked on the packet they were made in places like Cheshire back home. So, on a matter of principle I won't be buying imported food in M&S Shanghai, also because the quality drops during the shipping process. Socks and pants however are a must from M&S. I wonder if they'll stock up on Xmas goodies in Shanghai this year? Normally back home , the supermarkets start selling crackers and Xmas Pudd about now don't they?? |

It's a pity there aren't more expats in Shanghai with this kind of common sense. That Telegraph journalist could learn a thing or two fromn you. |

but if they didn't draw up a market plan considering us they certainly didn't customise their offerings for the chinese either. With Carrefour, it's unrecognisable compared to its outlets back in France. But M&S is a smaller sized version of what you get on UK main street. Here M&S is more high-end that it is back in the UK. Do they just want bragging rights fro being in Asia or is this part of long-term approach, more chinese sourced products to bring down prices while still holding out the 'designed in UK' cache. |
