Forget the Jaffa Cakes I'm looking forward to;
St. Michaels frozen hong shao niu rou mien (just warm in the microwave) or
St. Michaels family size duo jiao yu tou. (All meals contain at least two eyes) |

With Carrefour, it's unrecognisable compared to its outlets back in France. But M&S is a smaller sized version of what you get on UK main street. Here M&S is more high-end that it is back in the UK. Do they just want bragging rights fro being in Asia or is this part of long-term approach, more chinese sourced products to bring down prices while still holding out the 'designed in UK' cache. |
Yes. They've not created new products for the China market they have simply taken a selection from the UK for sale in China. I don't think that's a bad thing. Part of the attraction to the locals is exactly that - a British retailer selling British products. I don't think they have to launch new products for China in order to adapt they could just select products that they feel would appeal from the existing range. But who knows, we might well see new products just for China in the future.
It's like Lawry's prime rib in XTD. It's EXACTLY the way it is in the US in terms of the recipe and servings and that's how the want it. |

Don't! I just hope they keep this UK products. Think of the Danone Yoghurt in China. Yuck!
The food items at M&S is quite reasonable (in fact cheap) so we were actually wondering that day whether the M&S guys are just testing the market with these small amount of products and if things are getting well, they'll mass produce them locally in China.
As far as I know, importing food products to China is not an easy task. A lot of paperwork is involved, and not the least, of course, is the heavy duty This is also one of the reasons why we can't really get premium quality imported food here. All so-called import products we get are expensive but so-so quality |

hi, haven't been yet, but wonder if it is worthwhile? Have you lot left anything on the shelves, or are we all waiting for new stock to arrive? |

It's very hit and miss. Lots of empty shelves one day, filled the next, so I don't know where they're storing the stuff, it can't be coming daily from the UK. Try your luck, there's sure to be something you'll want but perhaps not everything. |

just back - empty shelves as regards any chocolate except big bars of milk chocolate. Lots of biscuits. The stocktaker was scribbling down notes as to what was in dire need of replenishing so you never know, there might be some there soon.
I think some of the posters here have created a tipping point on the jaffa cakes!
BTW, the toilets there are fine and are part of the "am I in the UK" theme you get there.
Also I have to mention that the mens shirts there come in a "two inches shorter" option which is disappointing cause I usually get the "two inches longer" variety back in Europe. |

I tried on a few pairs of trousers- one was almost perfect but a bit too short- the assistant saw me looking in the mirror, then went out to the shop and brought back the same pair with two extra inches on the leg.
"Am I in the UK?" isn't a feeling you get often in Shanghai (maybe in the Flying Fox, Jinqiao with a pint of Guinness when it's pissing down with rain outside...) got to love this new shop. |

Ahhh Grasshopper...
Does a man in the dessert ask how much is the water in the oasis? |

Ride the escalators with both hands gripped to the rails. Kids too. Do you fancy a furnace for your body? That's what you'll get. |

@Plat10.
I suspect the man in the dessert asks how much the custard is, rather than the water, but I digress.
Interestingly enough (for me at least), I was in the desert not less than 3 days ago, riding a camel.
No M&S out there I tell you. Just Uighurs and bad tempered ships of the desert. |

I believe the rule is that you are allowed 1 Typo per hour for every post written after midnight, with 1 additional Typo allowed for every 6 beers consumed.
I was actually 2 under the allowance... |

^ Really How did you guess? I thought it was still closed and all these previous posters had been breaking in late at night in desperation of Pickle, biscuits and trousers with an extra 2".
Hey Sir fiddler agree with your choice of champions breakfast, do you think Kommune could offer this fayre before the F! bus?
Platty love the analegy, 'Water in the desert ' (i got the drift regardless of the spelling, so pedantically picked up by computersolution, although pretty quick and funny got to give it to him ) |

I wish M&S did a version of Ginsters pasties.....
I know it is sad, but when we visit England we always buy our meal from the M&S food store at the service station. So armed with Prawn mayonaise sandwiches and a crayfish and rocket sandwich we heeded to the car to eat.
While marvelling at the clean packaging we noticed that the crayfish come from China!!!
Anyway my vote goes for the M&S jammie dodgers....fantastic!!!
Wife is still pi$$ed that they have not got her bra size though. |

They have English mustard but M&S only sell their own brand so you won't ever find Colemans in there. As for pork pies, I wish, but they only have frozen and ambient food products no chilled as yet, perhaps something for the future. |

Coffehawk_0,
It would be interesting to know your opinion of a good store.
I personnally believe that M&S has set a very high standard.
I agree that Walmart is terrible. however best buy is a great addition.
I would be amazed if people were not excited by M&S opening. We can buy products that are guaranteed to be of a high quality or you get your money back. Novile concept for Shanghai.
Also we can purchase food stuffs that are not contaminated and wine at very comparible price and quality to the UK.
My only critism is the cafe and the dazed look on the servers face when you ask for a product. |
