| Post subject: old house/heritage lovers around |
Hey, i've been hanging around this forum for some years already, but yeah, so far haven't asked this question (always forget this)
Anyone around (young expats) who love heritage, exploring old houses in Shanghai during weekends? |

I am an old expat... and married (happily)...and a bit solitary when I go explore old houses (my wife has made the effort few times to follow me, now...).
So, just can share some good adresses of forgotten lanes, if you need |

I would like to explore the old house, but I'm not an expat, it means I should go alone. ^_^ |

Great stuff, Michael...Pity the blog stopped one year ago...
Would love to see the finished result
I had read a similar story with pics with an Australian guy who renovated an old lane house in Beijing.
Very interesting, and cheering, to see some heritage saved and well preserved...
In Taiwan, most if not all historic buildings are being razed and replaced by "bathroom architecture"... (you know ?? in the west, we put the tiles inside the bathroom walls; but in Greater China, they stick them on the outside walls). |

Nice pictures, Mr Totomolo!!!
@Michael: Yup, Melanie is my frd. Haven't met her for a while. Will give her a ring tonight
Perhaps I'll keep this thread alive and post a picture of our new discoveries. Will be visiting some old places when I have more time. Been raining during the mid-autumn festival..... thus discovery tour will be delayed |

Those are really cool pics. Are they paintings of old houses? They didn't look like [digital] photos to me. Where are those houses?
I've been to some Chinese ancient cities before, but never here in ShangHai. I wonder what difference I'd see. Hmm... |

@Adrienne, that's the then SHHA, now known as HISTORIC SHANGHAI. I do attend some of their events @ Glamour Bar whenever I have time.
Tess Johnston, who co-founded SHHA, still lectures on the topic and is occasionally invited to guide the tours for Shanghai Expatriate Association; not sure if she stills do that lately, but I haven't participated any of these.
And the more commercial tours includes those offered by Spencer Dodington (Google it) and Jewish Tours by Dvir Bar Gal.
Finally, comes one of my favourite personalities, Ms Anne Warr, who also founded the Shanghai Explore Heritage and organizes guided tours. You may get more info about it at http://www.walkshanghai.com/
All of these tours comes at a price, but they all worth it
I do organize some private and very very informal walk tours too, but it's for my friends who share similar interest. It's because I'm exploring around and will send a message inviting those who dare to go with me. One of our latest tours was around Nanjing W Road and Shanxi N Road, and we climbed up to the top of the Cosmopolitan Apartments. Spectacular views |

You don't need Mac to do this. Lots of my professional graphist friends just use PC (windows XP) or even Linux, and they create amazing works!
For those Linux guys I met, they use only open source software, like GIMP.... |

@ Lababillarde: Sorry, so far, I don't have created a Flickr account... I am thinking about it ( I do same "pictures work" with my Taiwan pics , specially some from one old mountain town called Sanshia , very close to my Taipei home).
Thanks for the invite for future events, if I am in Shanghai, I would be glad to join.
I have read about the jewish tours by Dvir Bar Gal, main interest is if he can let visitors see the closed synagogues... I have read a lot about the jewish Shanghai , specially around 1930, but really not much left to see.
By the way, I have been looking for the book of Ralph Shaw "Sin City" for several years... If you know where I can purchase one copy, I would be very grateful to you..
Maybe you know this website too ??
http://www.earnshaw.com/shanghai-ed-india/tales/tales.htm
Few years ago, I found a flea market one old map very similar to this one (together with another one with more streets and canals) : http://www.earnshaw.com/shanghai-ed-india/tales/t-17ss.htm
They hang in my small Shanghai office

Yes, just Windows, and Photoshop 7... lot of work with the filters, colors adjustements...The "blend" took me long time to adjust, and it works specially great with the bricks...
gift: 3 more pics, from Sanshia Taiwan...
Maybe will give to some people the feeling to take a short trip for the Octber holidays ... |

Yup, heard about earnshaw. A historian ******** told me that there's an equivalent table of old/new street names on the net, but I donnu where it is...she forgotten the URL too
Regarding that book...nah, I donnu where to get it. Heard of it before, but seems like it's hard to get.
Yup, I wish so much to take a shot of Ohel Rachel. But the guards will stop me everytime when I attempt to enter the gardens.
I'm trying to discover more interesting lately... |
