| Post subject: Phone and provider costs in Shanghai |
I'm on schedule to arrive in Shanghai for a 6 month stay starting in Nov.
A few tech questions:
1) Cost of new phones. ranged from basic cheapos to iPhones
2) Cost of sims and calling rates
3) Buying a laptop in Shanghai. Is it worth it?
Thanks

1. as little or as much as you want to pay. range from cheap used from a couple hundred RMB to several thousand. Check taobao if you read chinese for an idea.
2. Depends on your plan. Basic pay as you go is around 100 RMB for the sim unless you want a "special" number. There are other plans that include international calls, romaing, IP long distance and all that. And recharge cards are 100 RMB.. check with China Mobile.
3. Not sure where you are coming from, but you can probably get a decent laptop with legal version of english windows and no viruses in the US for a little cheaper. |

Assuming you need Windows in English, it would probably be easier to pick up something at home. Being in the US, laptops are usually a lot cheaper then China.
New trendy cell phones are going to be expensive, but you'll have plenty to choose from. |

save money and bring your own mobile phone if it is a world phone(unlocked)
2) Cost of sims and calling rates
cheap, shop between china unicom and china mobile
3) Buying a laptop in Shanghai. Is it worth it?
prob cheaper in your hometown and remember if you need to have it serviced through the manufacture warranty and etc.
Thanks
