| Post subject: Americans please help me understand. |
After months of news coverage, firstly the elections of Obama and Mcain, then the elections of the VP, we now have to endure weeks of election analysis, thoughts, blah blah on the upcoming US elections. Its impossible to turn on either CNN (which i can slightly understand) and the BBC world news (which in the morning now is BBC America news) and see in depth world news coverage without having to endure endless political debates or opinions.
I would like to understand the perspective from anyone from US on how they feel about this, arent you totally peed off by the whole thing by now. I guess there is no other news more important than who will take over from George W, but after what seems like an eternity of coverage i have final resorted to not watching any more news in the morning. I just cant take it ! Its that bad that in the morning i put on condesending TW*T Frasier just for some background noise.
Roll on November 5th so we can all get some peace and quiet again and get news coverage from the little place outside the US called the rest of the world.
Not jumping on the yank bashing parade, there are people on here that are far more experienced than me at that. Just want to understand how the huge overkill of election build is percieved from a US citizens point of view. |

-we dislike it because it becomes all about 'politics' rather than direct discussion of the issues
-since the US and it's economy are so deeply linked to the rest of the world, I suspect there are a lot of people that care who becomes the next US president, hence global, constant news coverage.
-perhaps the extra non-US news coverage is just to show the rest of the world how silly the US can be at times? |

It gets really old, really fast. Here's the key thing to understand though. Those are no longer 24 hour news channels, they're just another station that is showing the biggest and most recent reality TV show. They constantly bombard you with what ever is the biggest news story of the day (election, missing white girl, etc) so if you happen to tune it at any given time, you're forced to wait (sometimes for hours) to find any news that you want.
It's a tactic used to keep you viewing longer.
So, if you want news about the downward spiraling economy, you need to try and catch the small snippets they run in between talking points about Obama and McCain. They're just showing what will pull in viewers, improve their ratings and increase their ad revenue.
Anyway, it annoys me as well and I stop watching because it's the same exact thing over and over and over again. I get my news off the net. |

Yes it is overkill, same information thrown at you every 15 minutes around the clock on CNN. Discovery channel, ESPN, even cricket are becoming more appealing to me than watching the news. At least we are not hearing much about Britney and Paris anymore! I do like the Situation Room in the morning, sometimes Larry King but yes way too much election coverage, interpretation, predictions for this Americ. |

All good points, i guess in the US its watered down a little bit compared to here because of the huge selection of viewing choices on TV, whereas here there are only the 2 news channels, and as Randyman (good name ) says the choice is between these shows and endless repeats on the other channels. Thank god for the DVD shops. |

I don't understand why every foreigner thinks it's their business to involve themselves in U.S. politics? We're Americans, we do things our way and then the rest of the world follows - we don't care what you think. |
