| Post subject: Shanghai is waiting.... |
Hello Forum,
I have recently been offered a job in Shanghai and as you can imagine I have a ton of questions about life in what seems to be a beautiful city.
My girlfriend teaches Pilates and I was wondering how easy it is for Westeners to find jobs in Gyms and Health clubs. Can anyone help as this will greatly affect my choice of coming.
As you can imagine I have plenty of questions but this website has helped me to answer several of them. I am still curious about food and TV. Are there any Western style supermarkets and how expensive are they? What channels are availble via satellite?
I have yet to see the package and the accomodation my company will offer me but I struggle to understand whether Shangai is expensive or cheap to live in. Can anyone help?

Someone else can probably answer the work in gym question. I get a sense that there is room for some capable personal trainers to setup shop.
There are western supermarkets here like Carrerfour, and many have imported western food. City Market is probably most famous for its imported stock and higher prices. YOu can buy the raw materials to make many western dishes easily. Imported food is always very expensive. You should also count on trying new things.. it will make eating much much cheaper.
What channels you get depends on the how the satellite is setup at the complex where you live. HBO, Cinemax, CNN, ESPN are all available.. and much cheaper than in the US>
Bottom line, if you try to reproduce the life you have in the US.. it will be more expensive.. the more local you go.. the cheaper it will be with the potential to be much cheaper than the US. You will save several hundred a month just not having a car and using the taxis and subway. |
