Both are pretty marginal. Can't see how Shanghai Air got Star Alliance status. |

Silver status on FM
Gold Status on MU
(I travel a lot)
On any given day either one can either delight you or leave you wondering how they stay in business... |

I fly enough on both of them to have achieved a frequent flier status of either Silver or Gold.
Or in other words...I have flown both of them several hundred times over the nlast 4 years..
On average...they are about the same. |

The Korea and Japan services on MU/FM are pretty good. All other flights very average. |

I don't fly as often as p1atl10, but to Hong Kong I have always preferred Shanghai Airlines. |

Both are alright. I think i prefer Shanghai Airlines though. Felt a little bit more comfortable. And i think it has better duty free selections.
But both may have those bad days of ultra flight delays that can drive anyone insane!
Want reliability fly Dragon Air! |

p1atl10, having gone through silver to obtain gold status on MU, how do you compare the 2? I'm silver now and with a lot of effort can make gold, but just wondering if the treatment is different enough to be worth it.
Specifically, I would refer to:
-upgrades, if any (I was upgraded once as silver on an international flight)
-treatment at checkin (seems to me checkin counters do not differentiate between silver and gold)
-lounge access (again, I think the lounges are the same for silver vs gold) |

Very little difference between Silver and Gold on MU inside China
Same Crappy Lounges
Same Check in Lines
More bonus miles... |

China Eastern: better service with more comfortable seats
Shanghai Airline:cheap Fare,
on international flight to destination Korea or Hongkong ,Shanghai Airline is more cheap,
but to japan China eastern is cheaper.
although these are two deffirent air line company, but China eastern hold most stock share of shanghai airline,
so you can regards the leaders are same. |

That's true, more bonus miles, but I'm sure you've noticed how they've nearly doubled the # of points required for certain awards (the awards I'm most interested in -- the international business / first class ones). Bastards have caught on to the ways of American airlines (small 'a'). |

the planes are pretty much the same for these two airlines for local flights. just take whichever is cheaper unless you are trying to achieve frequent flyer status. |

Agreed, both are pretty much the same, although my preference is for Shanghai Air since I use United's Mileage Plus ans FM is part of the Star Alliance and MU is not.
I'm pretty sure I just read something about a planned merger between the two. I wonder how this will affect their Star Alliance status - in other words will the new, larger entity be part of the alliance or not? |

I am not very impressed by either of them, but take FM if I have the choice because of Star Alliance. |
