| Post subject: Chinese Politics |
How do Chinese politics work at the highest levels of government? Really (sadly), the only things I know are that China calls itself a republic (PRC) and that the communist party has been in power for something like 70 years. But, how does the transition of power from one person to another person actually take place? The highest government official for China (what is that even called - President, Premier?) gets elected? appointed? By whom?
I tried to ask a Chinese colleague these questions, but his English wasn't good enough to understand me. He was only able to tell me who was likely to be in power next.
Just curious, by the way. Trying to understand my surroundings a little bit better. |

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) took the power 59 years ago, however every 16 years old kid knows that the current communist party is VERY different from the old CCP before 1978, the current ruling party is actually the victim of the old CCP and its policies. Check what happened to the current President/Premier during the 1960s/1970s and you will know what does the word "victim" mean.

The overall political status is an oligarchy - a small group of top leaders decide everything. These people represent different interests, some are pro-democracy (Wen Jiabao), some are not.
Some people believe all major decisions including the transition of power are the results of consensus, while I believe the 9 members of the Politburo Standing Committee of the CCP vote on all major decisions as the recent remove of the Shanghai clique is simply impossible as the result of "consensus".
The current President Hu Jintao (also President Jiang Zemin) was appointed by Mr. Deng Xiaopin on around 1990. The next President will be Dr. Xi Jinping, who was appointed by the Politburo Standing Committee of the CCP last year.

The highest ranking government official for China is the Paramount Leader of the People's Republic of China.
[/img]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paramount_leader
The best example is Mr. Deng was never appointed as the President/Premier (Full), but he was the No.1 guy.
Now the situation is slightly different, the President is suppose to be the Paramount Leader and thus the highest official is suppose to be the President. However, this doesn't change the fact that the top official is always the Paramount Leader.

There is no "who was likely to be in power". Dr. Xi Jinping will become the next Paramount Leader in less than 5 years. |

I believe all the necessary procedures are there. The president of PRC is elected by National People's Congress.
The People's Republic of China(PRC) practices the system of people's congress.China's Constitution stipulates that all powers in the PRC belong to the people, and the organs through which the people exercise state power are the National People's Congress (NPC) and the local people's congresses at different levels.
The National People's Congress of the PRC is the highest organ of state power.
You need to understand chinese culture first if you really want to understand how the chinese government runs. It's different from the western model. |

I have been told that under Mao, college graduates did not get Diplomas and Army generals were not given the title General.....since everyone was equal....
And people were supposed to wear the same clothes everyday until they wore out.... I think I know several people who have not heard its ok to change your clothes.. |

haha Plat, don't even encourage the sap. Worst argument EVER! Comparing America's race problems to China's human rights is typically unintelligible Warz, no logic. Besides. since then America has had a black vice president and today, an actual Black President.... any Black Premier in China? Strange comparison, totally redundant. |

are you on drugs?
someone mentioned some craps 30-40 years OLD in this thread and then I answered with some examples on how many changes a society could go through in that 30-40 years (e.g. blacks were denied to vote 43 years ago and now they just got a black president).
unintelligible? I have never had any good feeling on your IQ, personally and statistically.

Got it! Warz is that kind of Chinese traditionally pretentious and seif-centered. I doubt that mood is progressively going strong as the low-grade economy thrives locally. |

A) He is not a "black man". He is A man.
And my President. So would appreciate stopping the racial slurs and stereotyping.
And the President of the largest economy in the world.
B) Don't be too smug about your ecocnomy quite yet. 2.5 million factory jobs lost so far. And more to come.
Going to be a bloody 6 months for all the econom ies in the world.... |

As a rule, I make it a policy to not debate with bigoted little racists.
When you want to have a debate about President Elect Obama's qualifications on merit...Let me know.
Cheers |

Some perspective for you: why is it that when ever someone who is half-black becomes popular, they become "black"? Tiger Woods, Obama, etc. I think in India they say "wow, an Indian is the best golfer in the USA". |

Tiger Woods is 3/4 Asian..but he does have a blonde wife...So The blonde wife makes him a Afro-American NFL Football Player |

The Culture of China is one of the world's oldest and most complex cultures. The area in which the culture is dominant covers a large geographical region with customs and traditions varying greatly between towns, cities and provinces. Chinese culture is a broad term used to describe the cultural foundation, even among Chinese speaking regions outside of mainland China.
