| Post subject: Crime Rates in Shanghai. |
Last night, while strolling around I saw three Chinese guys - dirty looking, clearly Waidi - checking out two Chinese girls, looking at their bags etc. They were obviously casing them out to rob them. Seen XinJiang guys do this, never Waidis.
I was behind all this and I coughed, they looked round, I waved, said 'ni hao'. One round across the road nearly getting hit by a car while the other two ran up the road. The girls were clueless.
Now while I am not worried about being mugged in Shanghai myself as a foreigner (which waidi in his right mind would dare to kick up such a sh*t storm? And Shanghai 'men' would only do it as a vendetta attack if there were more than two of them at least). I do think, however, that due to migrants losing their factory jobs etc they will be forced into a life of crime. Man's gotta eat after all.
Also I guess, it coming up to new year (CHinese) might mean a bit more thieving. So, happy motoring!

Petty crime is rampant but mugging is rare compared to say, London where some guy will just walk up to you and say "give me your iPod" and you have to hand it over. As in any big city, common sense and being alert will significant;y reduce your risk of being a victim. |

Really? London's security level is that low now? But compared to other big cities in China, Shanghai must be the safest place you could find. |

^ Mate, one youth got stabbed to death, just for looking at some some other dude at a bus stop. London crime levels are high, but there are far worse cities out there.

London (and UK) is far from a safe place nowadays. Don't know if/when you lived there. But just to to give you an idea, read this:

^ Agreed.
You only have to read the British news on a regular basis to see how out of control it is in the UK now. Complete madness with the police, parents, social services, schools etc all willing to wash their hands of it and blame it on someone else. |

That's not my point. My point is that Shanghai is NOT a specially unsafe city to live in, most crime is petty crime like pick pocketing but in any major city in the US or UK, actual mugging is common, where the rob you with your knowledge that you are being robbed.
I don't think London is an unsafe city if you exercise common sense and keep your wits about you. |

^Nothing wrong with Brixton nowadays, in fact its pretty much up market with nice wine bars, etc. All the crap that was there was pushed southwards to Streatham and West Croydon a few years back. |

The upside is you're much less likely to be run over and killed by a drunk middle aged factory owner in an Audi A6 in south east London compared to Shanghai who will get away scot free because he is friends with the local police chief. |

^ though nevertheless with the number of uninsured drivers on London's roads, if you do get hit it will likely be a hit and run.
Still, the traffic is why I tend to feel safer on the streets of London than I do here, regardless of the higher levels of muggings. |

I guess it depends which part of Brixton you are in. I have heard first hand accounts of how walking along one street at night is suicide whereas another is just highly dangerous and another is safe as houses.
This is England actually. The danger can change from one end of a certain street to the other.
But back to the original topic - can't remember where I read it now, but it said that unemployment rates will become alarmingly high. This *could* cause an escalation in crime. The only thing we have on our side is that punishment in this country is 'swift and harsh' which certainly may act a a deterrent. |

but road offenders in London will always get caught because the traffic never moves faster than 5 mph, on a good day.
In the interests of bi-lateral co-operation, I'd like to try replacing the Met Police with the PSB for a month, and vice versa, and see who performs the best in reducing crime....... |

All that will happen is that after the month is over, the Met Police won't take any action without a big bribe paid up front and the PSB will go down Nanjing Road saying "evening all" to everyone! |

Allot of petty thievery, but nothing serious here. I had my laptop picked on the Metro some time ago. Don't ask! I'm surprised at the boldness of the move. filed a police report with the Metro cops, and they surprisingly did a very thorough report that took 3 hours. Walked me around the scene to understand exactly where it happened, and then watched all the video to find me. Unfortunatley there is no video on the actual trains.
Regarding physcial crime...I never fealt threatened in the 5 years I have come to Shanghai, and I have staggered our of allot of bars and slept in a few taxis in the early hours. Much safer in China then in the US. |

yes, alot of petty thievery in china, and that's just about as far as it could go. whereas in the UK, you might have to deal with gangs ( a lot of them are formed by teenagers!). |
