HI, i'm 27 and just arrived in Shanghai from Paris. I'm 198Cm tall so if you've seen this HUGE foreigner looking dumb in town in the last few days, it might have been me.
I need to meet english-speaking people since my chinese is really bad and most French people, for some reason, seem to have an ego problem.
Meeting girls, guys, friends to talk and go out with. Friends, dating, gay (athough i'm not), i don't really care, all i want is to meet cool people and have fun. Girlfriends ? If it's meant to happen it's definitely going to happen, so i'm not too nervous about that.
I usually talk about fashion, rock, and how coca cola tastes different in every country.
I love dogs, rock bands, people who know what they want, 2D computer games from the 1990's, and shoes.
I hate banks, people who wear fakes, chinese pop stars and cats.
That's pretty much all you need to know about my humble self.
And last but not least, if any of you is a Linux user, you might be able to help me configurig proxy, i'm new to linux and i use ubuntu jaunty... |

Ŵelcome Benj.
What would you choose instead of ubuntu ?
Fakes are a nuisance. You're french you should know the damages it does to employment both in France and in China. It's estimated that if people bought affordable bags (Zara or similar) instead of fake designer stuff, it would create about 10 000 jobs in france and several millions in China.
By wearing a fake, not only you close business for honest companies who produce both affordable and cool bags, but you also damage the image of luxury brands, which is precisely what France does better.
If you can't afford a Louis Vuitton Bag, just buy Adidas bag. If your girlfriend wears a fake, you look like the cheapest boyfriend on this planet. People who know fashion can instantly spot a fake even if it looks really similar to the real one in your opinion. So you immediately look cheap, but you actually think you look cool. That's just pathetic.
September 11 attacks have been financed 100% with counterfeiting activities. Think about it next time you buy a stupid fake. You think you buy a chinese fake, but actually the money goes to International Mafias. Really dude, it's not cool at all, and you end up looking like a dumbass with your stupid fake. |

Gee, how agressive.
It depends on the fake, I would never buy LV or high luxury branded bags because it's obvious only a few customers can afford themselves 7000 euros - bags, and you're right about it, it looks cheap. But I must admit that when I'm buying any fake with a nice design (don't care about the brands), ok, there is a "B" for Bally or a little CK somewhere on it. Damn it, I don't want to spend an extra 100 kuais for getting one without this brand, not as nice, I buy the fake for its design, not the sign or the name. In best case, I manage to conceal the brand.
I do not start to mention the electronic and computer fakes, thanks to which people can use softwares they couldn't otherwise.
If I started to think about mobs, employment in France, China or Groenland. I wouldn't even be in China. Nor I wouldn't even give some kuais to the beggars in the streets, since most of them have some kind of pimps, but I secretly hope they keep some for themselves. Plus, by listening to some locals, it seems that wathever I may do, I'm always supporting some mob, international or local, I don't know it most of the time.
Oh, and concerning Ubuntu, nothing special, I like to tease Linux users !
This is not the point of the thread to sentence fake business, sorry if you felt offended by my post btw. |

Yeah you know, electronic counterfeiting has nothhing to do with fake LV's. Electronic piracy is stealing intellectual propertyand most people who copy softwares or MP3's do it att home, it doesn't involve the mafia. But fakes are substittues to the real stores, products and employments in a large scale.
They are made in western provinces by poor people who are exploited and have absolutely horrible living conditions, plus you actually GIVE money to the mafias. Counterfeiting means you use money that could go to a legal company, pay taxes ad create jobs to pay a mafia that's going to use it outside of the legal economy, that includes terrorism and corruption. In short, you're cleaning monney for the biggest criminal organisations in the world, and that includes al Qaeda (and yeah _ in china too Italian mafias and al qaeda have their network)
Counterfeiting is more harmful alone than drugs and prostitution together. Youst count how many fakes you can spot in Shanghai in like 10 minutes,it's crazy. For the same price, these people could have bought a local product and help the local companies, or Adidas or Benetton create jobs. |

A local company like ... let's say Hotwind ? It looks like a common clothes shop but it's full of fake stuff, it was funny to visit their stores.
Actually, for electronics, it's quite the same with Shanzhai phenomenon. These are low quality electronic products (phones, laptops ...) producted in workshops in terrible conditions. Probably much worse than for clothes. This country is corrupted to the bone, don't be surprised.
And I didn't even mention fake medicine, which is much much much much more important than fake clothes.
My point isn't to defend fake, it's bad bad for sure, but it's part of this country in my opinion. Without it, I'm not sure Chinese wealth would progress that fast. Uneven development, that's the key of Chinese success ... |

Hi,
I'm new to Shanghai. I'm from Toronto but have lived in New York and Hong Kong. And for language skills, I'm a native English speaker with awful French(sorry but I'm learning), and speak passable Catonese and Mandarin. I'm a third year college student taking a break to explore China.
I love fashion, dancing, reading, travelling and hate grey skies, reallly really crowded places, and rude taxi drivers that ignore red lights. I could tell you a lot more about myself but would rather do so in person!
I'm looking for friends to explore Shanghai together and not for a hook up or a relationship. This might be obvious, but I am a girl who is 20 and would provide a photo except Facebook is under the Chinese firewall and my camera is broken and waiting to be fixed...
Also, suggestions of fun places to meet people around my age would be great! Thanks! |
