Post subject: Pay As You Go - Cell Phone Internet?

Okay, I am entering the Piranha tank and coming to you to ask my clueless question. Please be nice!

Currently,I have an older model Nokia phone (6800) which I adore, but I am now looking to update to the 21st century and get a PDA type preferably with movie and internet and full qwerty keyboard.

My China mobile service right now is on those 100rmb pay as you go types that I recharge from the nice lady in Carrefour in Jinqiao.

If I upgrade and want internet service can I still use PAYG or would I need to get a contract?

Any useful advice on the E70 (no internet - I know) or N810 - these are the current models I am looking at.

Thanks,
Kim

Just prepay more and you can access web via GPRS on the newer phones. You may need to call into China Telecom to set up a package so that you get better rates if you are using it alot. But yes, you can still pay as you use.

Call China Mobile on 10086. Follow the automated switchboard until you get to an English speaking operator to setup a plan.

I used to pay 100 RMB a month for 800 MB of data, but they have recently increased my data allowance to 2GB, which is plenty to view mobile webpages and retrieve Email. They deduct the money from your credit on a prearranged date each month so you need to make sure you add enough credit using prepay cards for that day or your mobile Internet will suddenly stop working.

Thanks YU888 and Matty. That helps to know it can be done.I am going to wait awhile longer as I have recently seen the N97 and am going to wait for it to come out before retiring my old phone.
