Seeing you have not many replies, will add my 2 fen worth.
Spent 2 weeks there with my wife on business, but loved it.
It is coastal, and if you like water sports, is excellant. You can fish, swim, sail, whatever. Nice beaches.
I thought a nice place to retire to. Is clean, and the people are very friendly, and PROUD of their City, that has a super Government, good infrastructure.
There are a growing number of foreign companies starting business there. (maybe slowing now). So there are many expats there.
It is certainly colder than Shanghai, but that has to be good in the summer.
1. Visit Tiger beach. Ocean World. About 150 RMB Great!. go a.m.
2. Xinghai Square. No charge. Much to see there. (Feed the pidgeons) They might shxt on you, but what the heck.
3. Xinghai Park RMB 10-20
4. Victory underground shopping mall. Biggest in Asia. NEGOTIABLE.
Buy and eat MA LA TANG local famous food.
5. Golden Stone Beach. Not in downtown Take light rail, leaves from last station. It's like a small island. Yummy seafood available.
6. www.visitdl.com
Hope this helps you.
John. |

To danny: I was told that Ma La Tang was local food, for Dalian, but thought it disgusting, so you can keep it. Anything else to offer the O.P.?
To Mark: you are welcome Mate. yes beautiful Dalian is. |

Never claimed to like the stuff. Just clarifying.
So you thought it was disgusting, but recommended that Gabriel try it anyway? |

(Sigh) I went to Dalian for a few days...the major points in it's favor are it's cleanliness and seaside setting. However, it is not nearly as exciting as Shanghai, Guangzhou, or Beijing, and not nearly as interesting as some of the more gritty central/western Chinese cities.
Monalisa, I apologize profusely for offering a polite clarification of your statement. Please locate the switch on your panties and and flip it from the "wadded" setting to the "unwadded" setting. |

OhDannyBoy: I agree with you, shanghai is SO exciting, but Dalian is a great place to visit, and maybe retire in.
As I am a boy, I do not have panties.

Warm, sunny, clean air, nice beaches, fewer expats than Sh/Bj..?????
These are all good qualities in any place in China.
I'm sold. |

Going to Dalian this week on some business. What I have heard it is supposed to be a beautiful city - I can prove or disprove that after the weekend! |

Ha Ha. Dont really agree with kidrok. Must have been turned down by a lady.
Certainly cheaper than Shanghai, plenty of taxies. Loved the tram system that goes down the main street. Of course its colder there, not far from Russia, but you can actually breath the air. |

I spent some time recently in Dalian and really enjoyed it especially the trams which reminded me of Melbourne.
I second all that monalisalee has said about the place. I am an Aussie and not used to the cold but their cold is more bearable than Shanghai's and their rooms are warm as toast inside.
They have some interesting historic homes that are more Russian in style, a good selection of nice new plazas and old grungy streets to make everyone happy and lovely beaches. The terrain was nice too as it was somewhat hilly, a nice change from the flatness of Shanghai.
There's a row of expat bars/restaurants with a friendly Irish pub and a good local food street too. As there is a huge development zone there's quite a few expats living there. The few expats I met there were extremely friendly and welcoming. It reminded me a bit of life here in the early 90's where everyone knew everyone.
I can think of alot worse places to be posted in China and Dalian isn't one of them.

Beatiful city, not so crowded as many big ones , clean, sea, beach, sunshine, bluesky. but cold in winter, fresh in summer.
it is really the place you need to see.
for food, i recommend Dongbei Cai, means some special dishes from east-north area. I like "XiaoJi Dun Mogu" which is chicken cooked with mushroom )) |
