Your board says how many are logged in - what's the use of that if there is no IM chat on the system? Add one or get rid of this (and a whole lot of other) clutter. |

There will be some improvements with contact with other people who are logged on. We tried running a site chat a couple years ago and no one used it. Everyone was using their msn, googletalk, skype or what have you. We will be coming up with another way we think will be very interesting to some people. Just don't want to say too much now. |

BTW.. we will be seeking some help from a handful of interested members to do beta tests on the site starting in a couple weeks. You will be asked to go through, click on everything, look at everything and document in detail what is working and what isn't. PM or email me michael at shanghaiexpat dot com if you are interested in being contacted about testing the new site for us. |

Suggestions.
1 - Before someone posts a new thread in Questions, Visa, Family etc..... A big warning siren should flash up **HAVE YOU SEARCHED FOR YOUR ANSWER BEFORE ASKING THE SAME QUESTION AS 100 OTHER PEOPLE***
2 - Make it easier to search. Filter out threads with no replies, or replies older than 1 year. |

What I think would be a good upgrade: a list of threads I participated in. |

| Post subject: Some helpful suggestions... |
Just some helpful hints to rocket the SHEX share price higher than LuWan's real estate:
1. Provide a free espresso coffee (delivered from starbucks) service for the first 10 to consistently repeatedly reply to any new thread that has been replicated in several forums.
2. Every other Tuesday, ban anyone with the vowels "u" and "i" in their name from participating in forums. And let them know it is because they've been bad.
3. Shame the expats out there that shame us all. Run a weekly "When Laowai Attack" netradio program with graphic footage showing the latest photogenic expat losing it with the locals. (And give free drinks vouchers to the expat and the first two to identify him or her.)
4. Try to help business and the community to build links, possibly through sponsorship. Can Malones or Paulaner host and cater the AA meetings for 6 months?
5. Stop pretending that there is anyone out there other than me and that Kum Longer fellow writing to you. I've worked out that apart from us, you are the only person who uses this website, and you are in fact a 1,000 handed Indian god with 200 computers, a tendency to invent multiple personalities, and a serious caffeine addiction.
6. Search functionality seems off sometimes. Maybe check it. |

Although maybe ffff's suggestion might be valid - it would reduce his drivel on the forum. |

Doesn't take long to get into the swing of things, does it ?
Shanghai is such a lovely city, it seems to give us two behavioral choices. We can become saccharine cooing puddles of smarmy goodwill or frothing wild-eyed vietnam vets muttering to ourselves as we stomp about the streets. If we could strap on six-shooters this place would become interesting. |

a forum group for all the best of the best in the last 24 months. Someone new to shanghai or new to the site can browse all the really, really good worthwhile posts and save time. A collection of stickies if you well but all in one section |

People should be allowed to approve or disapprove comments made on the forums. Much like YouTube you can have a thumbs up or thumbs down icon to click on. This will allow many posters to express their opinion without having to weigh in with a repetitive or trashy comment.
I've seen some websites move their forums to this model and the quality of comments improves (as people psychologically want approval...thumbs up) and trashy/idiotic comments are minimized (nobody want 50 thumbs down next to their name) Also the volume of comments cuts to about half.
This is crucial because ShanghaiExpats' search feature has been rendered useless as a specific search query often results in 30,000 - 50,000 matches which are completely unrelated. This means that when a person can't find the info he's looking for ....he simply posts the topic again compounding the problem.
Also once this is fixed, there should a forum search bar on the home page. You shouldn't have to click twice from the homepage to get to it. Next, the moderators should delete as many useless posts as possible. |

hmm...
suddenly I think about a forum 'map' like a mind map where it grows _moderatedly_ with things about shanghai. if this is sucessful then the KPI is that:
1. newcomers don't need to use search engine anymore
2. less duplicate of question and new topic for 'common' matter
it should have link to useful website and webpages outside this forum also.
hmm, anybody seen like this before in any other website/forum? should be interesting (and hard to code if we want an intelligent growing) hehe |

I would suggest having a look at a website which is similar to this one for layout called www.forumosa.com All the Things are categorized and people must post a topic in a certain category and the moderator can then check and reorganize posts if someone puts it into the wrong category. They can even appoint certain people to be in charge of certain parts of the website. |
