Post subject: [sponsor] Finding a good eye care specialist in Shanghai?

How can I find a good eye care specialist in Shanghai?

Often expatriates living abroad face the difficult task of finding heath care clinics that reach their expectations in terms of reliability, professionalism, leading technology and patient care. The language barrier only adds more complications to this potentially stressful situation, often resulting in the decision to return home in order to seek eye care services.

In the event that you or a member of your family need to see an eye care specialist here in Shanghai, for either pre-existing or new optical conditions, you may be unsure of where to find the best care and treatment available. Visiting a privately run clinic specialized entirely in optometry and ophthalmology is a far better alternative that seeing an ophthalmologist in a GP clinic.

Why is a specialized eye clinic better than the ophthalmology department of a GP clinic?

A specialized eye care clinic offers a comprehensive service and is equipped for all eye care needs. Only a specialized eye clinic focuses on eye care specifically, and is therefore fully equipped with all necessary and specialized equipment. This enables the clinic to carry out all varieties of standardized, specialized and sometimes complicated examinations and procedures, which can not be completed by the ophthalmology department of a GP clinic. As the name suggests, GP clinics are for general medical conditions and are therefore not specifically outfitted with most of the equipment or other facilities necessary for comprehensive eye care. To see a general ophthalmologist in a GP clinic for a somewhat complicated eye problem would lead to higher medical bills and time inconveniences as a healthcare professional at a CP clinic would need to refer the patient for further examinations to a specialized eye clinic.

Apart from specialized services & cutting edge facilities, what should I look for when trying to find an eye clinic?

Of course the other important factor to consider when assessing a clinic’s suitability for your needs is the physicians.

New Vision Eye Clinic’s (NVEC), International Patient Services Department caters to the ever-growing number of expats who now call Shanghai home. Our English speaking staff helps break the communication barrier to enable comfortable and stress-free visits to our clinic without the need to return home for high-quality eye care.

Our experienced physicians are skilled to treat eye diseases and visual problems in most ophthalmic subspecialties. Our faculty of physicians consists of well-respected specialists in the field of ophthalmology. Each of our physicians specializes in at least one area of ophthalmic care and has completed fellowship training in one or more subspecialties.

Are there any internationally trained physicians at NVEC?

Ms. Claudine Wallace (Senior Orthoptist) specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of ocular motility and associated problems relating to vision. Ms. Wallace, a UK state registered orthoptist with 17 years experience, sees patients of all ages affected by strabismus, defective vision, problems in depth perception, double vision or visual discomfort.

Dr. Lu Hung is a licensed optometrist who received her doctorate degree of optometry and post-doctoral training at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, USA. She has been practicing as an optometrist for over 13 years in the US and has now returned to Shanghai to offer her services to the community of Shanghai. She has extensive trainings of both optometry and ophthalmology and specializes in primary eye and vision care, and contact lens fitting.

Is treatment at NVEC covered by my health insurance?

NVEC has been a direct billing provider of many global insurance companies, such as Allianz, Atena, GMP and GBG. These global insurance providers have approved all disease related clinic visits and members can be reimbursed directly without the need for a GP referral. Check with your health insurance provider for details.

At NVEC there’s a standard fee of 550RMB for the first consultation. This includes a comprehensive analysis and diagnosis of your current vision and visual problems. A routine eye exam is priced at 750RMB and assists in early detection of eye disease and visual difficulties. We were the first clinic in Shanghai to perform LASIK surgery and currently hold a success rate of over 95% with LASIK surgeries. International patients who have had their LASIK surgery performed at NVEC are more than satisfied with the result of visual improvement. LASIK surgery is priced at 15,000RMB.

NVEC, established in 1996, is a leading provider of specialized eye care services in Shanghai. NVEC is dedicated to providing the most current and comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services in ophthalmology. Trust a specialized eye clinic that can offer highly skilled physicians in addition to technologically advanced equipment provide comprehensive eye care services.

I am looking into Laskik here in Shanghai. What is the cost? I was told a lot of expats simply go to Bangkok b/c it is cheaper and better. Any thoughts?

You cannot "simply go to Bangkok". There is a lot of follow ups required.

Go to New Vision, best thing i've ever done. about 15,000rmb (there is a voucher on this site for 2000rmb off i think).

Follow ups included in the price.
