| Post subject: Souvenirs for visitors |
So I had my first visitor this weekend, and I drew a blank when she asked about buying souvenirs to bring back. I'm not big on souvenirs, as a buyer or a getter, but I know I'll need to get them eventually. All I know are the usual suspects, ie YuYuan, HongMei Lu, S&T Museum, and Taikang Lu. Anyone have any other suggestions for good streets that would have things like ridiculous "makes no sense in English" t-shirts, t-shirts for Shanghai/China (like maybe local sports teams, not Mao shirts or ones with foreigner coming/going on them), "traditional" artsy stuff (fake or not), goofy toys for the kids (like SwissJames' ping-pong thing), and general strange stuff? Think of what you've bought that's been a big hit, even if for yourself, and let me know where. |

There's one building at yuyuan that downstairs has a bunch of phony antique stores. There's a good selection of stuff, some of it different and interesting and not expensive. Everyone I have taken there has found stuff they like. |

Chicken Claws from ALLDAY.
Lightweight, easy to travel with, and long shelf life... |

Oh by coincidence, I do believe I was just there this afternoon. I forget the name of the street but it was by the Haagen Dazs. We just sort of happened upon it as my daughter dragged us in so she could ride the escalators (one of her favourite pastimes), saw the sign for 'antiques town' in the basement and had a wander. Definitely saw a few things I would not be embarrassed to have in my home. |

Not inside the actual garden-y bit, but in that whole bazaar area around it.
The best way I can think to describe it is: if you can find the Haaagen Dazs and stand in the little open square facing it, the building I am thinking of will be to the left of the Haagen Dasz, across the little pedestrian lane. I know that pretty vague but having only been there the once, it's the best I can do! |

For fake antiques, there is also the antiques market spread over 4 lanes on the side of Xizhang nan Lu. All stores/booths sell more or less the same things, and follow some kind of "fashion": chess games, stones snuff bottles, copies of 1920 advertisements..etc
Slashing the original price by 5 and sticking to it with a frozen smile until the vendor gives up when you are pretending to leave, is part of the sport
Lots of very decorative pieces, I love there the sunday morning |

I do not exactly know about souvenirs. For me, I'll probably just lug back some locally manufactured food. There are a few stores along Huaihai Rd selling them..
The paper tiger looks great! |

Near Yu Yuan the 4 story building at 457 Fangbang Zhong Lu has a bunch of interesting items.
Dong Tai Lu Antique Market is also fun to wander around - and the Bird and Cricket Market is right across the street - always an interesting spot to walk your guests through!
Both are mentioned in this article along with some favorite shops:

Another fun place for Mao type souvenirs is Madame Mao's Dowry on Fumin Lu: http://www.madamemaosdowry.com |

And another great place is the Shanghai museum gift shop - they have a branch in Xintiandi now. |

Xizhang is in Pudong, I believe. |
Maybe Xizang Nan Lu...But I am nearly sure on some parts of the road, the roadsigns show Xizhang Nan Lu (on the subway signs, seems to me also). Ok then I said it in English: South t¡bet Road, opposite side the newly renovated Flower and bird market
I went to dig 3 pics I took last February |

I was referring to the size of the bust on that doll
You ever go over to Yantai / Weihai, Qingdao Roosky ? I always liked them. Driving along that coast there's some pretty country and cleanish water. Hard to find here ... |

Personally, I would go with the electronic flashing model of the Jin Mao Tower they sell on the street in People's Square. That pretty much sums up the experience here. I'll be sure to get one before I leave. |

Actually Tnmom and Mr. Totomolo were talking about same place: Dongtai lu antique market, which main gate is at t¡bet Lu...
Is it still there? heard that they will demolish that place... |

Dongtai Lu is awesome!
Why do they always have to destroy the thing that gives this city character and history?!
Are they gonna build yet another sky scraper? |

I dont think they will destroy completly Dongtai Lu.
They have already razed a lot of very old 2 stories houses on Xiz(h)ang nan Lu to widen the street. They have razed and rebuilt the old flower/bird market (very ugly now, and shopping there is as crowded as before).
and they are now repainting /renovating the remaining old houses: funny, all shops signs are of the same model, same shape and size
So i guess they will "aseptize" the fake antiques lanes too, will remove the small booths , and will ask the vendors to stick to their stores inside the houses
It will become another Xintiandi (or another Tongren Lu , for what they did to the bar streets) i.e small concrete boxes with same layout, same front window....
Uniformty is the rule , and 2010 is a good excuse to clean up what they perceive as mess |

What they perceive as a mess, (some) foreigners perceive as different.
Not everything has to be nice and clean, where's the fun in that?! |

Yep...this is why I wander as much as I can (to the sorrow of Mrs T, who dislikes old dilapidated houses, but she still tolerates my lunatic passion for old bricks) shooting pictures in the very old lanes of Lao Xi Men, before nothing is left standing up
The only thing that will never change , no matter the amount of steel and glass in modern buildings, is the pollution
So to the OP: maybe the best souvenir would be a set of 2 vials: one filled with suffocating fumes taken at the corner of People square and Yanan lu at 5pm a friday; the other vial filled with Huangpu water which can defy any laboratory analysis
could be a good business plan : "souvenir of the air and water in Shanghai" |

Maybe even pictures of Shanghai could be a good idea as this city will not look the same in a few years time! |
