The difference between shanghai and the other cities is that shanghai is attached to china Wink which is still a third world country. So if you live here you need to accept the good (cheap labor....) with the bad (bad manners).

Jetx shanghai's also cheap enough to get your own place so that you will not have household issues.

Second that.

"If you don't like it here, no one forces you to stay." -- typical answer for typical whiner

I dont agree with the way the Op expressed his frustration above; however, sorry to hijack the thread, but I take the chance to reply against the sentence above in bold letters, because it is something I have on the stomach for quite a long time (heard both from chinese and foreigners).
My story today is about Taipei 20 years ago, but it is so close to what people live in Shanghai in the present time, that I think people will get my point.
I settled in Taipei because I had married a Taiwanese lady and wanted to have a normal family life, not always between 3 continents and between planes (we had lived and married in USA, before living in France and finally setting in Taipei).
Not long ago after final move to Taipei, my ex-wife started to complain that I was often annoyed or angered by the Taiwanese way of driving, by the sidewalks so full of motorcycles that my baby had to walk in the middle of the road, by the taxis drivers spewing bloody betel nut saliva through their taxi windows,...etc..
One day, she exploded and said: " Now, you are in Taiwan, so live like a Taiwanese"
I told her:" If you think I am going to be even 50% Chinese some day, you got it all wrong..."

Making a long story short, finally, my ex-wife now lives in Texas, because she hates Taiwan, and me, I still live 50% of my time in Taipei, the other half in Shanghai.
I still hate the way it is, both in Taipei and in Shanghai, and I will probably do so until my last breath.

So what??

Its not the complaining about China, its not the comparisons between China and your home country, its complaining about stupid illogical things which are lacking in even common sense.

Unfortunately for China there are a lot of stupid illogical things which are lacking in common sense.

I see no hesitation with many posters complaining about their home countries. But what is it that they complain about?

Would it be stupid illogical things which are lacking in common sense?! Of course it is!! Unless you yourself are stupid illogical and lacking even common sense you will be pissed off with people who do these things.

orphee wrote:

Why?

An attitude such as this applies to many expats here and this tends to blind them to the stupid illogical things which are lacking in common sense that others see in China.

There is no argument that China is a developing country, a second and third world country. A problem that I see is China goes to great lengths to prove it is not! This has to be a result of culture - face saving.

So what is China then?

The vast majority of Chinese believe that China is the best country in the world, has the best food, the best culture and has developed this far all on its own with little input from foreign countries and expatiates. In other words China would be exactly as it is now WITHOUT any foreign investment, training or manufacturing. This is the traditional conservative view held by the vast majority of Chinese.

Because Chinese see nothing wrong with the stupid illogical and lacking even common sense things here there is nothing really to improve. Blame the "Feed the Duck" education system here. No one thinks and no one is encouraged to think - this is normal and completely acceptable. This adds to the frustration of many expats who see the stupid illogical and lacking even common sense things and realise that there is nothing that can be done about it.

Think of my light bulb joke:

Q: How many Chinese does it take to change a light globe?

A: None. A new light globe costs money and everyone will just put up with the dark anyway.

End of Rant in a quiet way. Very Happy

I will tell you why.

In the US my profession is patronized and paid little. In China my position is revered and paid well. In the US I get a lot of lip service for my "ideals" and dedication; in China I make a good living at what I love. In the US my field is relegated to the fringe; in China it is embraced.

Last week IKEA delivered some furniture for my wife's business NEW office in Shanghai. She paid the driver to assemble the furniture as he offered to do this. She left one of the Chinese sales staff to watch this guy and make sure he does a good job.

She just called from the office... you can guess. Everything was done half arsed and she has to disassemble a lot of it to remove the plastic that was meant to be peeled off first.

It was like leaving a child to watch another child assemble the stuff. Why should we be surprised - this is China after all.

My wife told me that Shanghai is spending even MORE money on Expo then what Beijing spent on the Olympics - this is to impress the world about China.

China wants to impress me? For starters how about grown men having more sense than little children.

^ Exactly!

And their job is to (attempt) to stop the punters from stepping under cars - not stop the cars from running over punters.

I got a whistle on my key chain... it can work!

I'm crossing a street...

...its the green walk signal...

...a couple short authoritative blasts on my whistle...

I can stop cars, even taxis and I let people cross!

Buses...well... big game, need an elephant gun.

The crossing guards don't know what to think, but one gave me a thumbs up while laughing! Made my day that.

Not sure what it is nowadays, but if I recall a few years back they were getting close to nothing - 300 RMB a month or something like that.

They're mostly laid-off factory workers.

Actually they are Project 4050.

During the Mao era people believed all that **** about not having any higher education and the Iron Rice Bowl - jobs and security for life... HA, where they in for a surprise or what??

The government decided to do something for these people who are now in their 40's and 50's who are pissed off for believing the government.

[the locals are so badly dressed... its funny, some girls try really hard... and they fail miserably.

the % of attractive girls is lower than 0.5%... i walked around for 8 hours each day for the past 3 days, i could count the number of attractive ones..... and it is a dense populated city]

Ever been to Tianjin? Spent there one year and after that Shanghai feels like heaven on earth full of beautiful angels^^

Anyway,if you think girls year dress bad.... you better not visit other places.

Hang on, I don't get it.

Right now there are many Chinese girls going about their day, wearing ridiculous Cartoon-Hooker shoes and skirts so mini that you can see their little arse cheeks bouncing around. Many of them have great legs.

They're clothes, I agree, look like Hello Kitty designed them under the influence of strong hallucinogenics, but they still have a certain aesthetic that I like.

There are tons of good-looking females in this city. None of them will look like Pamela Anderson or Halle Berry because they are Chinese.

They are good looking that's sure but it's when they walk like ducks or like a canadian woodworker that the magic disappears. The last goold looking one I saw had more hairs under her armpits than me...
