Post subject: Helicopters

Anybody else notice an increase in helicopters flying over the city? Hell, why am I saying "increase" considering last year and for the previous 8 years I never saw a single one. This last few months I've seen about two dozen.

nah, just all those government officials trying to outdo each other. Sick of their Buicks, the new toy is a chopper.

You'll see them parked out the front of KTV's soon, in the middle of the road blocking traffic.

Shanghai Daily 21 May 2009

SHANGHAI police put their first helicopter team into the air yesterday during a drill centered around crime and accident scenarios. The city has received three choppers so far, and another is on order.

You can take a private helicopter sightseeing tour here.

Although you aren't allowed to use a camera, which kind of spoils it for the pics up in the air side of things.

Oooh ! Now THAT is some smart thinking ! They really need four helicopters because with all that traffic up in the sky and the slow speed that helicopters move and the massive number of gang shootouts and fleeing desperadoes that Shanghai has, one wouldn't be nearly enough !

One could extrapolate from this to conclude that China will never have an economy, ya know.

Interesting that this has popped up on a thread.

I was out on the balcony the other night (in Suzhou) and noticed a very slow moving "engine on" rotating red beacon, way above the skyline.

We have some flyboys zooming around airspace here in formation - never at night though, and the slow speed suggests chopper.

Yep KJ, years here too and never seen one. Night flight for a bit of hush-hush ?

Seen the cops buzzing around with motorised paragliders a few years ago - the noise was a give-away !

we see helicopters regularly down here near Ningbo coast, they're military and often fly two or three in formation.

FYI:

http://www.sinodefence.com/airforce/helicopter/z9.asp

Z-9 Multirole Utility Helicopter
The Zhi-9 (Z-9) multirole army support helicopter is a licensed copy of the French Eurocopter AS 365N Dauphin II. The Chinese contractor of the co-production is Harbin Aircraft Manufacturing Company (HAMC) in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province. The contract for the Chinese local production of the AS 365N Dauphin II using the designation Z-9 was signed in 1980. Under the contract, Eurocopter would provide HAMC with 48 sets of AS 365N kits to be assembled in Harbin. The first Chinese assembled AS 365N was completed in 1981.
