Last building I was involved in building was only 3 stories, but there was an unbelievable amount of steel involved, all 25 m/m deformed rod, all in box sections, with stirrups, and ties. The backbone of the building is steel, and should be directly connected to the poured concrete foundations. There is no way deformed steel can be pulled out of concrete.
There was no evidence of this in the above building.
Also, as Shanghai is mostly on reclaimed land, which really is dried out mud, the foundations would need to be immense.
I am sure there are good building codes here, but the supervision of those, without corruption is the problem.
Steel is the most expensive part of concrete construction, so is tempting for builders to reduce or delete it if they can get away with it.
The other important component is correct cement/aggregate ratio. In the Wenchuan disaster, it was obvious that the collapsed buildings had no steel, and also a very weak cement mix. Deadly combination. |

| Post subject: BBC World Service Radio wants interviewee on flat collapse |
Hi everyone
I've registered with this messageboard to appeal if any of you would like to talk to BBC World Service radio in London.
We're covering the story of the collapsed flats at Lotus Riverside, and we'd like to hear from you - what do you think about construction standards in Shanghai? The flat owners are protesting today... what do you think about that?
Any comments would be greatly appreciated... if you're up for coming on the radio that'd be great... for our Newshour programme.
Just flick me an email at Ben.lowings@bbc.co.uk.
Thanks
Ben |

Some places suck more than others... Let's put it that way |
My GF's familly owns a apartment out in Longhua and it does suck. We went to see the house a while back and decided to check out the "park"....
After fighting our way trough the peddlers we arrived at the filming location for the classic war movie "Hamburger Hill" or as its called in Longhua "the park"..
The place was a barren dirt hill with not a single blade of grass left and some dying trees. As we proceed up the trail we enjoyed the beautiful sites and sounds of public urination besides food preparation, beggars and Chinese people laying in the dirt pretending to be dead. Or maybe they where actually dead? Would explain the nice aromatic smells...
We then decide to take a short break because our lungs hurt from the pollution but had to move on quickly because the beggars got a wind of our clean smell and started circling. On our way down the hill we stopped for some shooting practice at one of the many stalls where you could shoot stuff with a air gun for a prize.
All and all I would say it was a nice park and recommend it to anyone for a nice family outing. Remember to pack some mace, first aid kit and a love of war torn hills.
Tell them "the lao wei" sent you and you get a discount at the second hand bottled water stand. Yummmm! |

^ Ha ha... No mate, tell them the lao wai sent you, and the whole city stops...
I've only been to the park once 4 years ago. Back then there were still a bit grass left...
I that area, if you see any XinJiang people, hold on to your belongings... Doesn't matter if they are male/female 5-10-20-30-200 years old... |

"Shi Xiaofeng, a 29-year-old Shanghai native, has an apartment in the shaky No. 6 building, which is next door to the collapsed building, and said moving there was now out of the question No S**t Sherlock.
[blah blah blah]
Official investigators said the construction mistake that hit the No.7 building was also present in the No.6 block, causing it to shift slightly.
But they declared the No.6 building safe after it was fortified. They said the other nine buildings in the complex were also safe."
Slightly ? A new apartment building shifts 29 mm (ex SH Daily) 4 Jul 09 p. A3 (and that's slightly ?)
But, dear citizens - we have restored building #6 "to an upright position".
?With guy ropes and slurry?
Oh, My Gawd.
...and to that local uber-newbie one-post wonder wishing an adverse event (ape something I think), well..... |

they would be wise to turn these into a tourist attraction in view of the international media attention. The Leaning Towers of Shanghai. |

Good idea, but better hurry.
The famous leaning tower of Pisa is 836 years old.
These babies probably wont last that number of minutes. |

So it was fortified in the 2 weeks since the first building collapsed. What did they do? Use spackle to fix the mistakes?

Must have owned one of the apartment in the condemned buildings. Perhaps ape should direct his anger at the people responsible for this crap construction instead. |
