Actually it was the One Year Memorial Re-enactrment of the Sichuan earthquake fiasco ...
Now comes the truly scary part. See the other three or four buildings in the photo ? Same construction, same plot of ground, same builder, same high-quality foundation ... get my drift ? What do we all think will happen with Dominoes Two, Three and Four ? |

If they used IMPORTED clear packing tape to hold everything in place this disaster could have been avoided!
Live and learn guys! |

| The official Xinhua News Agency said that a 28-year-old worker, surnamed Xiao, had gone into the building to get his tools and tried to jump out the window when the building fell. He was from Anhui province in eastern China. |
Its obvious that he did it. He must have tripped over the screwdriver wedged on the side of the building before the extra foundation glue was dry. |

The government building inspector that took some guanxi to approve the construction of these buildings is going to have to answer for this. |

Actually, Some of you seem to think this is really funny. Imagine if people were living in them thar buildings.
Most would be very dead. You would not be laughing then. (well, maybe some would still think it was funny)
Sichuan all over again, on a smaller scale. No steel in foundations, in fact NO foundations, and probably buggar all in the construction.
I hope there will be a lot of heads rolling, but as TIC, I guess there will be a cover up, with money changing hands. |

that's kind of like korea few years back: bridges ofer the river collapsing under rushhour traffic, department stores just collapse... diefference there, things actually changed afterwards.
sure not to be expected around here. as always, one bad guy will be found and put on trial (for lack of communist spirit?). then sentenced and then.... FINISHED. nothing will happen or enforced or what-have-not. wonderful country our hosts are running here. |

So for a bonus question, the government response to this will be:
a) to more strictly enforce the construction regulations, or
b) to decide to block the reporting of this and any other Chinese negative stories on the internet. |
I chose B and also
c) Block Goggle
d) Blame it on the USA
e) Take some homeless dude, give him a 2 hour trial, and shoot him |
f) ban Confucius out of the minds of all Chinese people. |

The reports originally came from Xinhua. The purpose of the reporting is to make those in charge quake in their boots. They'll get them, if they can find them. No mention of whether it was caused by the heavy rains, but they weren't really all that heavy. If this thing fell over like a pack of cards, then its unlikely to be the city planners faults. Rather the builders taking massive short cuts during construction which would only become apparent during the final inspection/certification process that the government would undertake. However, the builders are likely to be savvy enough the hide these massive defects. My money is that it's a construction quality issue - not a design issue i.e. the builders did not build in accordance with the approved designs. |

| Post subject: Shanghai Highrises Could Worsen with Rising Seas Threat |
Just reminding everyone about the Reuters report, "Shanghai Highrises Could Worsen Rising Seas Threat" made in October 2008 and reported in Planet Ark. There may be more yet to come unless a close and hard look at planning regulations and standards is made by the authorities all over the world. No-one will be immune from global warming that has to be seen as a global foe that we all need to collaborate to combat its worst effects :
Here is a quote for the article
Its location on a low-lying alluvial plain near the mouth of Asia's longest river, the Yangtze, had already left it prone, but researchers warn that forests of skyscrapers sprouting across the ambitious metropolis could compound the threat by causing its marshy ground to sink.
"Shanghai came from the ocean, and has been facing the threat of rising sea levels," said Wang Pingxian, a member of the prestigious China Academy of Sciences and professor of ocean geology at Tongji University in Shanghai.
"The rising sea level is a worldwide problem, caused by global warming, but Shanghai and Tianjin, among China's coastal cities, face the biggest challenge, mainly because of land subsidence," Wang said as part of the Reuters Global Environment Summit.[/size]

The apartment building is at a premium location in Shanghai, about five metro stops from downtown areas, and is sold at a price of 18,000 yuan per sq m.[i]
Ridiculous prices as it is, and you never know what you're buying. What about the other two buildings next the one that collapsed. Surely they were built in the same way?
Apparently the site is close to the Lian hua Carrefour.
Very sad that the worker was killed. |

Nothing new. This one gets reported because it is in Shanghai. Outside Shanghai most incidents are not reported... Anyway that is why it is so important for the Chinese govt to control the internet and maybe banned camera phone and Youtube..maybe even this forum.. |

RMB18,000/m^2? That's cheap for Shanghai! Wait...is this the price for each flat after the building fell over?
Yes, its a shame a worker was killed. |

I heard that now that its over on its side they are going to secure the building and transform it into garden apartments and sell them for an even higher price... |
