Now that is the truly Chinese answer !

Hint for zerg - look at the pilings that were supposed to be the foundation. Insufficient for this type of soil and that height building. It's not bad luck.

Earthquakes in Sichuan are not bad luck either. When the schools fall down all full of children, it's not "bad luck."

leidelaohu: agree with you. BAD luck is just a GOOd excuse for lazy ineptitude.

As a past builder, I searched for the steel in the Whenchuan buildings. Could not find. Nil steel. kids and others were murdered.

Similar in the apartments, as there should have been massive amounts of concrete attached to the foundations, but was there?
NOPE.
That aint bad luck, but sure is BAD.

Imagine if the place had been full of people a few months from now.

^Exactly what I said, it would have been a catastrophic nightmare. Thank whatever god that that didn't happen. There have been buses on fire, the Sichuan earthquake, so much is already bad in China. I feel sorry for the family of the worker who died, poor people. Sad and could have been avoidable, but unfortunately there is an intent to take shortcuts in modernising and developing. Sad

WHY ???

The goddamned place is 5,000 years old, I hear this all the time. In 5,000 years no one learned that "shortcuts" always cost more in the long run ? How much did they save by having these buildings turn out to be scrap ?

Dumb, Archie. Really really dumb. And totally avoidable, which makes it even dumber. Is there anyone left in China who understands cause and effect ? "Bad luck," Jesus H Keerist.

The building has good quality. It fell as one piece.

J/K. The foundation obviously looks inadequate.

I am Chinese, and I will quote from "My Commander and my regiment" (我的团长我的团),Chinese die from indifference and lack of attention (中国鬼死于听天由命和漫不经心). This building is a perfect example.

Last time I looked the foundation was part of the building there Charmian Mao.

And a very important part...

About "bad luck":

This is the traditional - and in fact also official - way for looking at safety issues in China. You compare with statistics. Thats how people say, during an accident in metro construction site: we build so many metros here, 10,000s of workers, its normal 20 of them die. Or when hearing of accidents in the West: you see you have the same problem in your country? Western approach is different, we think every life matters, "zero accident".

I wonder if they've used the same technique for building the other blocks?

Does anyone know the accurate address of this? I want to be there with my camera when these idiots try and prop the thing up again.

There's no such thing as bad luck. it's a myth.

Shoddy construction is a pure hard cold fact.

As is government corruption and greed.

I went there this morning with my smaller daughter and she kicked the two remaining blocks down (she wasnt even wearing proper shoes, just those tiny fake Crocs). I took pictures, will post later. On our way to Jin Mao tower now.

I dont like this one. This is misleading or misinformed at best. Corruption is prevalent at the lowest level of "government" - in fact its not even called governments, the local bureaus, the lowest level local officials. Top level, the real government, is mostly quite ok. More than officials even, the local companies are so extremely corrupt, thats right provate citizens working for private companies. I am talking about purchasing people, low to high-level managers, those who select contractors and suppliers, who buy or receive material, check their quality etc. The bottom of society is extremely corrupt. This is the very foundation of Confucianism, is you allow me this shortcut which I am aware doesnt express 100% of the truth.

Oh, we want to see the photos.

Photo 1: She kicks the building. (Let her pose with one of the standing ones)
Photo 2: Building on the ground.

My lawyer said I better not post the pic, as we may get sued by the construction company and their friends in local gov. It would be a unique opportunity for them to blame it in an obnoxious laowai kid. Soon millions of Chinese human flesh engineers (do we call them that way, you know the crazy internet mobs) would seek us out and be demonstrating in front of my office and home. I would have to emigrate, but unlike those who were likely the true culprits behind the collapse, I don't have a villa in California and a US passport, so my escape wont be that easy and pleasant.
