I do exactly the same when I get off the subway and they do not give way...maaaan they look so confused, but then again, is it so hard to wait for people inside to get OUT so you can go IN?
Sad part is, whenever I politely wait, I NEVER get to sit and more than 1 time I have to see 2 trains go by because I waited in line istead of cutting it like some others. GGRRR! |

yeah, don't understand why locals don't have the courtesy or the courage to speak up and say a simple, "excuse me." instead, they try to slide into gaps, invariably hitting you with a bag or shoe as they're passing, or they just push.
when i know someone is trying to get past me but they don't say anything, i just stand still. sometimes i'll position myself to make it harder for them to get past just to force them to say something. and STILL they don't say anything and just try to jump over or force their way through. then i get exasperated and say out loud in chinese, "hey, you can't speak up?"
even in taiwan, people are very vocal with "excuse me's" and "please let me through's" to the point of being uber-polite with that nasally, begging tone. but in china....not a peep. |

It's because there's no one to speak to. They don't see you as a person, they see you as a dead not-moving object. Like they do with everything...
If other people see them talking to let's say "a door", then they'd lose face wouldn't they... "Wow, see that guy is talking to a door... he must be a bit off..." |

Exact opposite happened to me. I had the window seat and asked the person in the aisle seat if he could let me through. Instead of stepping out he just repositioned his legs to let me get by. My backside was facing him as I was stepping over him to get to my seat, so I squeezed out a juicy fart in front of his face. |

Sad but kind of true I guess. Its not exactly stupidity, not in the sense if IQ or anything, more like a cultural inadequacy to the world. And they have the same problem among themselves, in Chinese, in China. Its has nothing to do with us foreigners. Very interesting. |

For Chinese rudeness, I don't think there's too many cultures on the planet that can relate to life in China over the last 50 years. That's 2 generations of stuff. That affects one's daily actions, they're learned habits, not inherent traits.
But Victor's analogy does fit on the surface. Clever young chap that Victor, one day he'll be working for Cambronne. |

I think the explanation is very simple. Unlike in the west where squeezing past someone without saying something like excuse me would be considered very rude, in China it is not. It is simply culturally acceptable to squeeze past without saying anything. |

Seeing we are sharing now, I would like to know what your explanation for Chinese people's inability to walk straight is?
My theory is a nation wide inner ear infection many many years ago, which wasn't treated properly and since turned chronic.
It will also be passed on from mother to offspring...
