Post subject: Best Hot Pot restaurant in town?

Visitors from home wish to try some good ol'hot pot. I have my own favourite place, but I might be missing the big picture of the hot pot universe. I'm wondering....

What's your favourite hot pot restaurant?

What's it's speciality?

Where is it located?

How about the prices?

tks, rgds,
HC.

Henry I went to one last month and it was delish, which is something coming from someone who doesn't normally like hotpot (not a soup fan) but the name card is in Chinese, so I have no idea of name or address, but phone number is 53829797 and it was on the 3rd floor. They also have two other locations. They have a website www.dai-i-chi.com.cn so perhaps it is indeed named Dai-I-Chi. There were 7 of us and the orderer went overboard, we had loads of meat and seafood and the soup base came to the table with fish already included which was yummy. I didn't pay. Cheers

HC. I am not sure what kinds of Hot pot will your friends prefer, strong taste but makes u thirsty or healty taste but sometimes too mild? And what's your requirement about the surroundings? Those noisy but have a happy atmosphere or those quiet but lack of party mood?
Anyway, here are some recommendation of the hot pot restaurant. Hope you and ur friends can have a good time there.

Name: 皇城根

Location:18 at Gao lan lu, close to si nan lu, lu wan district. 53069151
A bit difficult to find the place. First you ll have to find a garden, then an apartment. That's it. Dont be too surprised when you see a really shitty looking two or three storeys high creature standing in front of you.

Speciality: They have this really old-style hot pot made of bronze. The no msg no salt nothing in the soup. The delicious soup is solely water at the beginning. Mutton and the chinese cabbage there, no matter how long you put them in the hot pot, will never be too well-done. The candied haws on a stick is the most impressive one I have ever had in my entire life. Btw, they have a grey cat in the garden. But dont touch it. Its original fur color is white. Wink

Price: 60-80rmb/person

Name: 吴记麻辣火锅
Location:2066 at Nan Jing Xi lu, Xie he shi jie,协和世界。close to zhen ning lu, yong yuan bang lu. 62484723 62484809

Speciality: Incredible tofu. Good "snow" beef

Price: Around 60 per person.

Name:来福楼火锅

Location: 3rd floor Lipo plaza, No. 222 at huai hai zhong lu. 53965572

Speciality: Good decoration. Quiet and relaxing. It's not easy to have an elegant hot pot dinner. But lai fu lou makes it possible. A bit pricey for hot pot. Food is good. It's more suitable for a date than a friends' gather together.

Price:100 rmb/person

Name:泰燃烧烤火锅
Location: 2nd floor, N, Hong Kong Plaza, No. 283 at Huai hai zhong lu 63907006
Speciality: Thailand style. Strong taste. A lot of curry. The beef vein ball is famous.
Price: 70 per person.

The thailand one I havent tried yet. will give it a go in may holiday. Smile

Chain hot pot restaurants are not in my list , but they are worthy of a try too.

thumbs down for Lai fu lou,
expensive and not delicous.
Never been to Tai Ran so no idea Razz

all of the blow need booking.

Guo Bi Peng Da 锅比盆大
facing Hilton Hotel, couldn't remember the address
Thai hotpot with strong curry, a lot of seafood on the menu, kinda expensive when last time we 2 people spent around RMB400. But the location is convinient and environment is pretty good compared with the rest in the town.

Xiao Fei Yang (小肥羊)
a lot of branches on the town, the most famous one should be somewhere on 1390 Lujiabang Lu, by Zhizao Ju Lu, special made mutton is yummy~

Nanhua (南华火锅 )
355 Changshou Lu, by Changde Lu, just normal, nothing special in my mind.
Yiqun Lou (逸群楼) 130 Tianyaoqiao Lu (you'd better reserve seats)
It has another branch in the Hongji Square of Xujiahui, but I usually go to Tianyaoqiao Branch, service is not bad, the environment is clean and without a lot of western fusion like Guobipengda does. Mushroom and bone soups are its speciality.

Tan Hotpot (谭火锅) 666 Tianyaoqiao Lu, inside Shanghai Stadium Suan Cai Yu (酸菜鱼) soup is the greatest of this. Nice service and a lot of snacks from other provinces are served, such as pancakes and Du Pian (肚片), don't know this translation though. Rolling Eyes

Yes... But lai fu lou is so far the only hot pot restaurant that doesnt give me a hot pot smell. The smell sometimes can be really annoying. I change clothes, I take shower, I spray the perfum, none of these works.

Anyone who tried Fei Du hot pot? it's run by Hongkong based management team and good for its price and cleanness and they use electric stoves so its a bit healthy i guess. they have two restaurants in town

1. Yong Jia Rd 36 (end of maoming bar street) 64317989

2. Xing Guo Rd 380 ( near huai hai rd) 62808399
