Post subject: "Shanghai Rush" Episode 11 and more

Leaving the splendor of old architecture on the Bund, the group soon arrived at the crowded Yu Garden, aiming for the Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant. This establishment has a history of more than a hundred years. Usually there is a long queue waiting to buy Nanxiang steamed buns. They are also known as “Shanghai soup buns”.

The contestants’ task is to buy a 32 steamed buns and for a team member to eat them. In the long queue, Hudd, Nic, and Helmut were the only foreigners. Comparatively speaking, it’s a fairly pleasant task. But to eat so much hot food in such a short time is no easy matter. Nic complained that he was “dying of hunger” while shouting his order: “I want thirty-two steamed buns."Then the contestants begun eating. With mixed-gender teams, the eating was left to the males. Hudd was the exception because he had a stomachache, so Anna was the consumer. Nic and Anna ate delicately; but you know, the more they ate the more difficult it became, so Liz and Hudd encouraged their partners by words and gestures.

Helmut had the bright idea of emptying the soup before popping the bun in his mouth. Richard and Alice, on the other hand, thought things over and showed the team sprit of boosting each other when the going gets tough. Alice rushed to buy mineral water to cool the hot buns to help Richard. But she went a step further and, in fluent Shanghaihua, bought two bottles of iced water! Consequently, they finished the task quicker than the rest. These unorthodox methods drew some strange reactions from other diners, and most of the comments were disapproving.

Having eaten the steamed buns, the contestants visited the textile markets on the southern Bund and hastily bought costumes with an expense account of 300 yuan. They then rushed to the stage door, where they would prepare a performance. Lujiabang Textile Markets were moved from Dongjiadu Textile Market, where the environment is much better. Seventy-percent of the customers are foreigners who love the tradition of made-to-measure clothing. When they arrived at Shanghai Grand Theatre, Huangling was waiting for them. Dressed in cool black, this young Shanghai lady told them this is the very stage that singers dream of. She encouraged the contestants to make good use of their several minutes of exposure.

Shanghai Grand Theatre holds many performances such as ballets, operas, musicals, and concerts. Due to the contestants’ excitement, they were all in high spirits on the stage. Though the time was short, we got to see a totally different side of the contestants. Anna ditched the sports shoes and her bare feet were an even better match for her beautiful silk dress. While they were not the best singers, their performances were quite impressive. Hudd even practiced a difficult lifting and whirling motion; Helmut and Muzi dressed in Tang suit and cheongsam; Helmut showed us some hip-pop, then Muzi sang a Denglijun aria without accompaniment, winning a round of applause. Nic and Liz both appeared in white, and their singing, dancing, and movement were stylish. Richard and Alice’s performance mixed jazz dance, poem recitation, and singing – very creative. All the performances were so good that Huangling felt it hard to judge the winner.

Trailer of Finale

The Preview of the Twelfth Episode (Finale)
Now the final episode of Shanghai Rush! This is a contest of height and speed. Flying high and then diving into the sea, the two groups of contestants will start from Shanghai Global Financial Center, the tallest building on the mainland, and then go to the Shanghai Aquarium to get the next clue. Later, they’ll go to a food market, riding a tricycle loaded with watermelons just like the cart drivers in olden times. Having passed through various obstacles, they’ll immediately change pace by taking the Maglev (the fastest transportation on land, reaching a speed of 431km/h) to Pudong Airport. In the airport lobby, the contestants will collect 50 luggage carts, with the hostess Chen Lei cheering them on. Finally, they’ll start from Longyang Road Metro Station and reach the Expo center on South Pudong Road. At night, the well-lit China Pavilion, which is still under construction, gives you an idea of its grandeur when friends from all over the world gather next year.
Who will still hold on after twelve episodes?
Who will shine among the ten groups and win the big prize?
What surprising result will the host announce on camera?
All these will be disclosed this time. July 19 from 8 - 9pm only on ICS.
