lets use north korea as an example, you would agree there aren't really any expats there, since its a self-enclosed nation.
are you really telling me there is no beer, no internet, no computer, no cars, no foreign cuisine no cafe and bakery shops there??? they have all of those. whether their ppl can afford or have access to it, its another question. but they have all those things. |
No, access to those things is the ONLY QUESTION! The only thing that matters is whether the lives of individual citizens are better. If a country "has" something but NO ONE CAN USE IT, then it is USELESS! Thanks to the expat community here, everyone in China has access to all those things. Not everyone can afford it, but thanks to foreign company jobs, the Chinese are no longer used as slave labor and many people have money and can go use those things and improve themselves. Thanks for proving me right with your amazing stupidity once again. |
You just changed your whole argument.
Your point was not if ppl's lives are better by affording those things, your point was without expats those things will not exist. which i already proved you wrong.
In north korea, there is no expat/foreign influence. but there are cars, beer, computer and etc there.
even if you want to talk about accessibility, i am sure north korean ppl have access to beer and computers. very few ppl would afford cars there, just like china not everyone can afford one either. and even in USA not everyone has a car.

the only reason the whole p1ssing match happened and dragged on, is because someone stated without expats Chinese ppl would be slitting eachother's throat on the streets for 5 rmb. |

Nope, my point was without expat influence those things would not be here, and you never proved me wrong. You have no links of those things being able to get here without foreign influence. If China closed its borders, why would they even bother trying to get their citizens a better life? The entire point of getting these technological improvements is a foreign one to China. As Buddha said, Life is Suffering. Why would you evolve beyond what you have if you're meant to suffer?
The culture of China has changed BECAUSE of expat influence and that is why they WANT these things that foreigners have.

HURR HURR! You're so SMRT... I didn't get carried away. If I had a magical machine and could instantly remove all the expats and expat influenced things from Shanghai right now, what would be left? All those thieves, all those people who beg for money from people passing in the street, all those people who make a little extra cash by gouging laowais on prices. What do you think will happen to them?
The scenario of a person slitting someone's throat for 5kuai doesn't seem too far off in that situation.

How stupid are you? If Chinese can't leave the country, can only watch things the government allows them, and no foreigners can enter in order to tell them or show them certain things, HOW WILL THEY EVEN KNOW IT EXISTS?! Communism does not tell you to go for your dreams, it tells you to know your place and stay there. If not for foreign influence and expat investors, capitalism would never have made its way into the hearts of the government here and spread through China.
Good or bad, it's plain as day.

It has EVERYTHING to do with my argument. If the people can't leave the country and foreign influence can't come in via expats, how would the people know anything? Expats are here, people saw what could be achieved, what kind of life they could lead if they had some money. People dared to dream about a better life than just whatever the government told them to do. That's why there's even a middle class here beyond just the corrupt politicians and the people they know.
It's amazing to me how ignorant you are of China's culture and heritage. Not to mention everything else under the sun. |

WHAT THE F0CK are you talking about?? do you just make all this sh1t up???
Chinese could leave the country. my father left the country in late 60's for several years. i would like to think he is so special but he is not, many others did too. my cousins left in the late 70's for school, i left china in early 80's.
and china is not north korea or afghan, chinese ppl could watch TV back then. programs might be very limited, they did not show any tits and a$$, they did not show anything talked bad about communism, but they did show programs where you can see this thing on 4 wheels called a CAR.
without expats chinese won't know what a car is??

They were allowed to leave because the government felt a foreign influence would be good for them... Listen to what you are saying. By definition you are a foreign influenced person bringing back expat ideas to China (albeit warped, narrowminded, nationalistic ones).
If you think China doesn't need expats or foreign influence to succeed, why did you leave? Why did your father leave?
I'm not crazy, I'm just smarter than you and that can appear like insanity to a sad and pathetic person who can't see beyond their own nose like yourself. |

China joined the community of nations through free trade and communications 20-30 years ago. And I say great - the world is a better place for it. Arguing about the nuts and bolts of this event is rather silly as it is all intertwined into one large global economic machine of give and take. Everyone wins. (Read Adam Smith if you don't get it)
China embraced foreign money to grow - DUH - as do the largest international debtor nations - the US and the UK - everytime they sell T-bills and/or Gilts and direct investment.
China opened up to foreign brands - DUH - as do everyone else in the world.
In regards to some of the "peasant" like rude behavior here in Shanghai, I will take that any day over the crime and drug ridden council estates and project/slums in the UK and the US.
I am enthused to be here to see China embrace the world while maintaining some of their old culture thus adding something very new and unique to the world community. Go China! |

I find that ironic given the Chinese government's willingness to destroy old structures and building to make way for new malls and skyscrapers. |

No, it's BOTH you idiot. MOST citizens cannot leave. Some are allowed to leave for a few days or a week. Even fewer are allowed to leave for a year or more. Many who leave become U.S. citizens because otherwise they would have had to return to China. Guess what happens when those Chinese come back here... They're expats. =D
Are you a U.S. citizen?
Here's some information about China restricting migration.
| Quote: |
Through most of China's history, strict controls prevented large numbers of people from leaving the country. In modern times, however, periodically some have been allowed to leave for various reasons. For example, in the early 1960s, about 100,000 people were allowed to enter Hong Kong. In the late 1970s, vigilance against illegal migration to Hong Kong was again relaxed. Perhaps as many as 200,000 reached Hong Kong in 1979, but in 1980 authorities on both sides resumed concerted efforts to reduce the flow.
More liberalized emigration policies enacted in the 1980s facilitated the legal departure of increasing numbers of Chinese who joined their overseas Chinese relatives and friends. The Four Modernizations program, which required Chinese students and scholars, particularly scientists, to be able to attend foreign education and research institutions, brought about increased contact with the outside world, particularly the industrialized nations. Thus, as China moved toward the twenty-first century, the diverse resources and immense population that it had committed to a comprehensive process of modernization became ever more important. |

"change China and make it a better place by bringing in the things they learned from a FOREIGN country" is the only time oversea chinese go back?????
you think too highly of them. most of chinese are selfish.
i know plenty of oversea chinese, who go back to china for the sole reason that they made money and they prefer to live in china. |

if china really closed itself up. at the worst it would be just like north korea, except its a much bigger place.
so if north korea can have cars and beer. china will do.
give it up already loser. |
Okay, now you have used the example of North Korea one too many a time, it actually works more in Marakanis favor. First of all, as I have already said, North Korea sees more and more foreign involvement every passing year. They are now even starting to try out similar things to the Chinese Special Economic Zones, they need foreign investment.
Beers in North Korea... hm... they do have imported (foreign influence...) but now since the beginning of this century they have Taedonggang which is brewed in NK. This brewery is however (every single piece) brought over from the UK, it is the old Ushers Beer Brewery that was in use for over 180 years. Now if that is not foreign influence then I would be damned.
All the technology for building cars that the North Koreans have come from either Europe, China or Russia. |

I hate these Chinese people that leave China and then try to tell me that they are American or Australian or whatever. NO you ain't **** American, you're Chinese and always will be.
So quick to turn their back on their country. Why? |

Hang on! My Grandma was born in the "Old Country" and she died believing she was "American."
If I decided to call myself "Chinese" I'd get more than a few funny looks. |
