Premier League goes free-to-air in China
from Guardian Football
• Broadcaster Guangdong TV to show live matches this season
• Deal will expose league to enormous new audience
Chinese football fans will be able to watch English Premier League matches on free-to-air television again this season.
Since 2007 exclusive TV rights were owned by the digital broadcaster Win TV, with matches only available on subscription – a limitation which hampered clubs building on their fanbases in the world's most populous country. However, Guangdong TV, which broadcasts to most of the nation, has now paid £1.6m for the right to show one live game and a highlights package every week.
The Premier League's commercial director Richard Masters said: "We have many pay TV partners in Asia and we have a responsibility to maximise revenue for our clubs so that we can continue to attract the best players in the world. That said, we are obviously happiest when we can match strong revenue with good viewing figures. We want as many people as possible to see Premier Leagues matches.
"In China we are very happy that our partner WIN TV has reached an agreement so that some matches will be seen free-to-air on local stations."
Masters said that a new approach might be taken for China when the rights for the 2010-11 season and beyond are negotiated.
"The Premier League is considering a strategy for China which has been successful in many regions in Africa whereby at least one... match each week is guaranteed free-to-air coverage."
Manchester United played a friendly in Hangzhou on Sunday and Tottenham, West Ham and Hull City will be taking on local side Beijing Guoan in the biennial Premier League Asia Trophy in the Chinese capital starting tomorrow.
Asia accounts for more than 40% of the League's global audience with nearly one million fans tuning in. |

That's a pretty cool deal for China and the region.
The future of the English Premiership looks bright in Asia.
Here in the UK we have to pay £45.25 (CNY 510) a MONTH for the privilege via SKY.
Crazy money |

Even then you cannot wach the 3pm kick off games. Providers that carry all live EPL games pay about 45% of their total purchasing of content budget for EPL alone |

very true. Also with season ticket prices as high as they are, is it any wonder the terraces are now packed with the "prawn sandwich eating brigade" as Roy Keane once put it? |
