Post subject: Radio controlled model planes ?

Is anyone into flying radio-controlled model aircraft or helicopters and things in Shanghai ? If so where can one do it - legally ? I've not found any decent model shops either, although all that stuff is of course made in China. I've seen small RC heli's in toy shops but that's about it.

If it's not allowed I suppose I'll have to put my favourite hobby on ice for the duration of my stay here.

It's not something the locals are into, probably because it costs a lot of money, but the shops do exist in Shanghai. Do a search on these forums - there are some topics discussing where the shops are.

As to whether it's legal... it's such a nitch thing that I seriously doubt there is *any* mention of it on the legal books. Laughing I think you'll be fine in that respect.

Not sure about planes, but there's a hobby shop that specializes in RC cars in Gubei (on Guyang Road between Gubei Road and Shuicheng South Road). You can also find plenty of RC helicopters in toy shops in AP Plaza (in Shanghai Science and Technology Museum metro stop, line 2).

You might also want to try this small shop (forgot the name), located at 3915 Hongmei Road near and north of Yan'an West Road. They have RC cars, boats, helicopters, and planes.
