Post subject: Blogging

I am looking to set up a blog site for which is accessible to people in China. I looked at blogspot but that appears to be blocked.

Any others that are easy to customise and preferably free or have a small monthly fee?

Get yourself some hosting & get yourself Wordpress installed. It's not that expensive. I host a couple blogs on my servers, perfectly fine for both personal or commercial blogs. Wordpress is a fantastic program. PM me. I can set you up.

Yep Wordpress and host on your own domain is the best solution. Any commercial blogging site can and does get blocked arbitrarily from time to time so it's not worth the risk.

Even with this....My own blog was blocked a while ago (hosted on a private server).

Thanks guys. I had a look at the word press site which seems easy enough and they have one click hosting through bluehost and justhost. Another question then is are they easy to customise if i don't like the templates? I have some HTML knowledge from way back then so not sure how applicable that is nowadays?

Loads of customisation options, and no need to know any html or CSS as it all plays together very well.

Once you get on the wordpress bus and recognise the signs, you'll be amazed at how much of the internet uses it.

I use Shanghai Expat.

Put all other posters on ignore and it looks like your own blog.

Sorry when you say private server you mean your own server or a commercial host like Bluehost? Sometimes if you share a server with some other blog that has attracted the attention of the censors, that host will be blocked and you'll be caught up with it. Or did your blog have something sensitive that would attract the censor? If it's the first case, you can simply change hosts and it'll be fine.

No it was a VPS at ovh.com. But I think you're right, somebody must have tripped the line... Since I renewed 'till 2012 I'm quite stuck with them (also got my email there).

Do you know any cheap hosting company ?

I use these guys trouble free for quite a few years:

http://ace-host.net/

You can move your site and emails over I guess but you will probably lose the subscription. Best to check though as some hosts will refund you for unused months especially if you write and explain the situation (blocked in China) many will be understanding.

yes. mine. http://www.terascape.net I'm sure Swiss James can attest to it as well.

Thanks guys, but it's still more expensive than what I pay now. I will try to resolve this with my provider.

Yup he hosts mine, I never have any problems and if I did, they'd be sorted out double quick.

Not that expensive. Only need 1000 RMB a year, should be plenty of room for your blog. Up to you though. Good luck & happy blogging!

You can install free themes directly from the Wordpress CMS since version 2.8. Otherwise, another good resource for quality paid themes is themeforest.net.

I hacked away at an open source theme (and probably shows)

If you're not keen on coding then you should have a look around at plug-ins for your site as well. Some useful ones are the Askimet plug-in for spam comments, Google Analytics plug-in (you'll need to sign up for a free analytics account first), Sociable - which allows users to share your content via social networks, and a related posts plug-in.

Live Spaces does not ever seem to get blocked. It is slow and clunky but it works without having to play extra money. If you have blogger usually you can post but you can't look at your own page.
