Post subject: Life and Work in Shanghai

Hi there,

I am thinking of packing in in here and heading to asia to live and work.
I work in senior sales management, and my background is in building/construction materials/services. I want to deal with western buyers selling anything from toilet bowls, to fire collars, to plasterboard or insulation batts.

How possible is it to get a post like this?

What are salary packages like?

Where are the best places in Shanghai to live?

Would really like any help or ideas anyone has to make it all come true.

cheers

root barker, all the western construction materials are sourced in asia. My last overseas posting saw me in the rag trade utilising the trilateral agreement between asia and africa. Now I know building. I know the ecomomic climate in the west, particularly insofar as it pertains to imports from China. Surely there is a market for business professionals with good technical understanding in this field?

I am in touch with a few head hunters who are interested, so I guess I am more interested in feeling out the climate from an expat's point of view. Current salary offers are between 180k usd and 220k usd. Is this standard? Or am I being shafted. I dont want to be locked into a 2 yr contract on less than market value salary.

I need to look out for my own interests, and having only english, hindi, french and limited japanese language skills I am n ot going to be able to converse in manderin, therefore local contacts will be difficult.

cheers
