  • Are you ready to let your wild side come out and play? Why not let your inner Tiger run free through the concrete jungle of Shanghai? After two years of successful Tiger Beer Santa Pub Crawl’s in Shanghai, the new and improved pub crawl at Datong Mill would not let you down.

  • SHX answers the question that matters most: Which convenience store beer is the best?

In Shanghai, there are means of getting delicious imported and domestic craft beers, but sometimes all you need is a cold, cheap Chinese lager to get your night started. The first bar I hit on a Friday (or Wednesday) night is AllDays where the Reeb is always cold and the smiling cashier-ladies are dressed to impress. And no night out would be complete without an appearance at the new hip French bar “Le Outside of Lawson.” Your local dirty restaurant (家常菜) carries Suntory in lieu of Stella and we expats have to accept that. Not all beers are created equal, and though cheap Chinese alcohol-water does not match its foreign or microbrewed cousins, you’d be surprised how many convenient store beers are actually...tolerable!

Shanghai has a lot to do. More than you could ever possibly do in one week, one month, and given how fast the city is changing.. even one year. Normally a night out encompasses drinks, dinner and perhaps some dancing or other entertainment. Depending on your budget, you have some tough decisions to make. There are several neighborhood spots that you could explore and find just about everything you want within walking distance. You might seek an upscale evening of fine dining and dancing with lots of choices for dinner and entertainment. Visit the East end of Huaihai Rd around the Huangpi Rd metro station. Within walking distance, you could have a good dinner every night for a month and not try the same place twice. Xintiandi is two blocks from here, Hong Kong Plaza is across the street, and a whole strip of neon-lit store fronts, restaurants, and upscale shopping await you.

  • 842_200Located in a quieter part of Xu Jia Hui only 5 mins walk from the metro station, Lounge 842 is not only easy to get to, but also easy to find. As you walk down Heng Shan Road you cannot help but notice the striking green late radiating from the gardens of the building. Behind a high gate and wall, you'll find a quaint and classy Restaurant/ Lounge/ Cocktail bar.

  • Still undecided on the nightspot where you will ring in 2010 with your friends and your family? Whatever your decision, you'd be well advised to send wishes to your beloved near and far, as the looming year-end soirées are set to be outright bling fests. Another way is just to head out with them to enjoy the festive mood around the town during the last minute of 2009.

  • James Cameron is back with his super sci-fi thriller in 3-D this week, Avatar, which has drawn thousands of DVD lovers back to the silver screens in town. It is not only his ground-breaking techniques but also the message he wants to convey through this film that has cranked up the heat for this Hollywood blockbuster throughout.

  • Tucked in the corner of the French concession, Fame is the new hot spot to be - and to be seen! - for trendy peps crazy for original sound, tasty design and luxury environment.

  • New Year's Eve is falling on a Thursday night this week and everyone is busy looking for funky parties to welcome 2010.

What about the following 3-day holiday? At least it's a treasured time for all those popcorn-munchers, who might be attached to their DVDs or glued to film screens around the clock- sleepless in Shanghai.

When you walk on the street, you’ll be overwhelmed by the Christmas ambience in every nook and cranny: golden, silvery, red, white, green, blue, all painted around the town. Shopping is one of the inevitable pastime activities for city dwellers. These days, major shopping malls have launched various promotions and events for the upcoming holiday season. Their shining decorations for Christmas are the big highlights for them and for the whole town as well.

  • Brothers Eduardo and Marco Vargas hosted their first "Gentleman's Club Night and Burlesque Show" at Vargas Grill on December 15. Three dancers put on lively Vegas-style dance shows in between a sumptuous dinner that included hearty barbecue ribs, grilled tenderloin steak and side orders of mushroom soup, crispy calamari and quiche (348 RMB, including wine). During the dinner, some of the gentlemen (and their ladies) sang "Happy Birthday" to several attendees and chomped on fat cigars. Shapely Vargas girls watched the night unfold from on the wall. The gentleman's club theme nights are expected to take place about once a month at the grill-heavy restaurant, 3rd Floor, 18 Dongping Lu.
