  • The latest apple computers, beautiful grassy sports fields, well qualified foreign teaching staff and a pathway to the best universities in the world. These are some of the things that parents have come to expect from the International schools. Therefore, the new parent has a quite a difficult job choosing among these schools, as they all offer so much and promise even more.

  • If you’ve been around Shanghai or lived in China for a while, chances are you’ve noticed it – the all too common white expat male who seems to have a fascination with all things Asian: Asian culture, Asian food, Asian language, and most notably, Asian women. If you haven’t noticed this phenomenon already, try doing a little research for yourself. Dive into the “Dating, Singles & Relationships” forums on ShanghaiExpat. Take a trip to the local expat bar and strike a conversation with one of the many expat men who are trying to figure out where to meet a local Shanghainese girl. Take a walk by the beautiful Xihu and take note of the many older, white expat men who have been strolling alone by the lake for years, hoping to attract the attention of a young Asian girl.


  • A 12 year-old girl stands on the driving range practice mat, swinging a golf club for the first time. On the mat next to her is an experienced, 15 year-old boy fine-tuning his swing plane. PGA Professional Jeff Ritter stands directly behind the small group of students, giving them professional advice on what to be thinking about before striking the ball. And a 27-hole golf course overlooking the China Sea awaits the group in case they need to get off the range and onto world-class fairways.

  • Looking for housing, community, and schools are just some of the items on the check list for new expats on their whirlwind tour of Shanghai. As a woman who has experienced it as an expat kid in Asia, as a university admissions officer, and now as Deputy Head of Marketing & Admissions for Yew Chung International School of Shanghai (YCIS Shanghai), Corrie Van Velzer shares a few tips on how parents can find the best school for their child.

  • Alongside China’s rise, becoming the 2nd largest economy and the biggest exporting country in the world in 2010, more and more merchants from every corner of the world are coming to China to find their business partners and suppliers and to seek new programs in which to invest. But they soon discover a big obstacle to success --- language. Although many local Chinese people can speak English, few of them can speak English in a professional and accurate manner. These foreign merchants want to know more about the Chinese market, government policies, and business culture. The Business Chinese learning market has emerged to cater to people like these in the past few years.

  • According to the Environmental Protect Agency (EPA), the air inside homes can be two to five times more polluted than the air outside. What does that mean for us? It means that it’s even more risky to stay at home than to go outside. Continued exposure to pollutants will definitely do us no good so we need to make some urgent changes and there is definitely something we can do about it.

  • What did you learn today? I learned that people once believed hippos sweated blood. It was eventually discovered that the red secretion that seeps through their thick skins simply protects them against sun and infection. I also learned that in order for cobwebs to be photographed clearly they are dusted with cornstarch.

    Moving to China
    When I moved to Shanghai, I had to create my own niche. My wife, Margaret, had a good job offer that moved us here. I had never been to China and could not speak a complete sentence in Chinese.

  • Shanghai Roots and Shoots’ Organic Farm Program started in 2007. This semester Liuying and I, who are from Fudan University and the Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, took over the task of teaching kids about worm compost farms and methods for growing food organically.
