The Glamour Bar filled up quickly as Jonathan Watts prepared at the front of the room, gathering together his material on his laptop and waiting for the technological tantrums to be tamed. Outside, rain and smog - somewhat appropriately - obscured the Glamour Bar's famous views across the river. Watt's book, When a Billion Chinese Jump, outlines the problem posed by China's drive towards modernization and its exponential increase in consumption.China's sheer size in terms of population heralds an Industrial Revolution with environmental effects many times worse than that which took place in Europe during the 19 th century.

Around 70 people filled the Crystal Room to hear Norwegian philosopher, Lars Svendsen, talk about his book The Philosophy of Boredom. Recently translated into Chinese by the Peking University Press, the work addressed the nature of boredom in modern society and suggested ways to accept it rather than overcome it.

  • icon_200_02 With every day that passes we creep closer to the 2010 Expo, and for a long time, opinion has been split on how successful the half year event will be. Local Chinese have their own opinions with most thinking it will be a success. Most foreigners see it as a big waste of time and resources, with most Brits comparing the pavilions to a bigger, but prettier version that was the useless millennium dome. Having searching the internet I came across a short article from littleredbook which I thought you might be interested in. The writer highlights some interesting points which I think most expatriates would agree with, but whether his theory is correct or not only time will tell.

  • SHEXPAT: Language has never ceased to amaze me with the increasing number of languages and dialects there are today but often languages can be grouped into different families which are said to be genetically related, do you think there is such a genetic affiliation? And if so, Chinese would be closest to which group of family?

C.LIU BIN:No, I don't think so as Chinese is rendered in Pinyin with four intonations, and featured in Character. The pronunciation of Pinyin is complete.

  • "Thousands of companies have received bankruptcy protection since the global financial crisis came; people feared that more news will be heard as financial carriers could not break away from the poor destiny. However, companies which up against the trend are not in minority. Mostly, entrepreneurs got into the muddle and didn’t know what the next step is. Then, which category are you belonging to?" This is the challenge Professor Dr. Brian To from HEC Paris declared in the forum of "NDRC-HEC EMBA-The Crisis and Leadership" in Jin Jiang Hall July 28th. "Are you adaptive to the crisis?"

Fasten your seat belts for the 2009 Auto Show in Shanghai (April 20-28) held at the Shanghai New International Expo Center is bound to blow you away!

A showcase of largely upgraded Chinese car makers from Great Wall, Roewe, Byd, Brilliance to Chery is proof that domestic demand is on the rise. Chinese car makers have emerged out of the global economic turmoil due to, in essence, its independence from export market, and its product development at cost-effective pricing. Other longstanding automakers are still trying to hold on tight with sales plunging worldwide, this auto show will hopefully help fire up the intention to purchase of car buyers.
