  • Three-time Pulitzer Prize winning author and journalist, Thomas L. Friedman, gave the keynote address at last month’s University of Southern California (USC) Global Conference in Hong Kong. The sobering message delivered, which is detailed in his new book, “That Used To Be Us: How America Fell Behind in the World It Invented, and How We Come Back,” was that for all of the ingenuity of America in the 20th century, the 21st century is a new frontier that cannot be taken for granted by the world’s only superpower.

  • When China started blocking YouTube.com, we expats may have felt like we had lost a relative. However, we soon became aware of YouTube's illegitimate Chinese cousin YouKu ( 优酷 pronounced yōukù or “yo koo”). YouKu is a bit more "wild-west" that YouTube. Sometimes you can find full Hollywood movies, music videos, and other valuable intellectual property all for free streaming in addition to all the normal viral videos, stupid pet tricks and almost-porn-but-not-quite teases you'd find on YouTube. YouKu also lets you download these videos onto your hard-drive so you archivists can watch them anytime you like.

  • When you walk out of the Metro station at Pudong's Science and Technology Museum (line 2) and into the underground mall next door, you are greeted by cold fluorescent lights and shopkeepers hounding you to come check out their tiny stores. This place is known as the “SciTech Fake Market” by the laowai and has all your basic “fake market” staples like knockoff shoes (UGGS, Converse and Vans galore, don't pay more than 60RMB), polo shirts, watches, bags, and DVDs that either “fell of the truck” or are counterfeit. But what makes SciTech stand out from other underground markets is it's one of the best places to buy inexpensive touristy gifts, cheap toys, winter clothing, and luggage. Yet another thing that stands out is that it seems to be one of the easiest places to bargain.

  • October 2010: The longer China sits out on free open source software, the further behind its software sector will fall

  • How to use QQ? 2010-08-10 18:11

In an effort to educate you about Chinese social media, we’ll introduce you to the most popular online messaging software and how you can use it.

When I meet new Chinese friends and we decide we want to stay in touch, I never get asked for my business card, my email address, or my phone number anymore. Nowadays, young people and businesses alike are using QQ. I realize its time for me and all of us other expats to get on the bandwagon!

With technology continually developing and expanding, some say it is inevitable that the eBook will eventually arrive to take our day to day tasks one step further into the future. However, with the arrival of the eBook and the ever busy minds behind the scenes looking to develop and improve the latest models, does this signal the death of the classic paper book?

As a personal fan of the paper back, I see no appeal to snuggling up on a sofa with an eBook, having to worry whether I'll damage it as I chuck it into my bag, use it as a coaster for my mug of tea or leave it on the beach as the sea begins to creep in.

  • If you’ve been having problems accessing our homepage, and being redirected to some random Chinese search engine called 114 then I’m afraid we can only humbly apologise. Due to the unique way that China Telecom works, when our server hits overload most of our traffic gets redirected directly to them.

  • With a throwback to 10 years ago, did you imagine what our lives would be like after a decade? Before we cross the threshold of 2010’s, shall we take a flashback for our changes in the last decade, full of ups and downs, sweets and bitters?

Here Jocelyn Noveck from AP has listed 50 things alphabetically, which has changed our lifestyle so gradually that you don’t always notice its happening, kind of like watching a child’s growth.
