The awarding ceremony of the first ever “China Untapped, Discover Treasured Towns” was held in Wu Zhen recently. The objective of the project is to bring cherished and unknown towns to the spotlight and to arouse social awareness to the protection of these treasured towns.

“China Untapped, Discover Treasured Towns” is a project co-launched  by International Channel Shanghai (SMG), the Tongji Urban Planning and Design Institute and Channel News Asia (Media Corp Singapore), assisted by Travel Times and Shanghai Daily. Meanwhile, the first forum on the development of China’s Treasured Towns was also held on Dec. 8th in Wu Zhen, which highly reflected the social significance of the project. Some of the most respected personalities in Urban Planning and Design Industry participated in the forum, such as Prof. Ruan Yisan, deputy member of the national bureau for historical and cultural preservation, Zhou Jian, Deputy President of Tongji Urban Planning and Design Institute, Prof. Yan Guotai and Han Feng from Tong Ji University, Albert Chan, Executive Director for Planning and Development of Shui On Group, urban planning specialist Benjamin Wood, Chen Xianghong, creator of Wu Zhen and Grant Hosfield, partner of Naked Retreats Boutique Eco Hotel. “It is never an end, but a new beginning. International Channel Shanghai under Shanghai Media Group will keep an eye on the sustainable development of small and medium sized towns.” Xu Hao, president assistant for SMG said. As the 2010 Expo draws near, ICS will take the opportunity to promote these treasured towns to more and more people world-wide.
