It’s a Jungle in There: Why You Need Some House Plants

It’s a Jungle in There: Why You Need Some House Plants
By Leah O' Hearn

There’s a stretch of florists along Shaanxi Nan Lu that deserve a bit of exploration. On this small stretch of road between Fuxing Lu and Yong Jia Lu, opposite the new Culture Centre, you can find a strip of florists selling fresh cut flowers, fakes, and potted plants big and small.

If you’re not in the mood to wander the Caojiadu Flower and Aquarium Market, this is good place to visit. It’s generally quiet and the prices don’t seem to be much different from those that Nichols found at the market.

Earlier in the year we ran an article by Greenwave Solutions about cleaning up sources of indoor air and water pollution. They had a wealth of tips about what plants can help to purify the air in your home. Some of the plants that turned up repeatedly in their recommendations were the Scindapsus Aureus or Devil’s Ivy (绿萝), Sansevieria Trifasciata Prain or Viper’s Bowstring Hemp (虎皮兰), Zamioculcas Zamiifoli, whichWikipedia says may be known as a ‘Zanzibar Gem’ or even a ‘ZZ Plant’ (金钱树), Chlorophytum Comosum or Spider Plant/Bracket Plant (吊兰), Strelitzia Reginae bird-of paradise (天堂鸟、鹤望兰), Hedera helix or Common Ivy (常春藤), and a variety of Mint (薄荷). You’ll find many of these and more in these florists.
