Non-invasive Cosmetic Surgery---A New You for the New Year

Non-invasive Cosmetic Surgery---A New You for the New Year
By Guy M. Rochman M.D.

People form first impressions within fifteen seconds of meeting someone. It has become an incontrovertible truth; at work and socially, appearance is increasingly linked to success. Consequently, plastic surgery and cosmetic medicine have become increasingly popular and available, not just to stars in Hollywood or Hong Kong, but in most big cities worldwide. Shanghai is no exception.

Whether for rejuvenating the aging face, wrinkle reduction, or simply improving the quality and appearance of the skin, more people, men and women alike, are turning to plastic surgery and cosmetic medicine as a solution.

Busy modern lives leave little time to be away from work and family for surgical recuperation, so much of the newest technology eliminates down time. Standard surgical procedures to address the aging face - facelift for sagging neck and jowls (rhytidectomy), eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) to reduce droopiness - are now less invasive, especially if done at a younger age.

Understanding the choices can be daunting, however. Many different lasers are available, technology and equipment are also being constantly upgraded. The highest standard of care is equipment using "combined energy" from different sources, including radio-frequency, laser energy and intense pulsed light. The total amount of energy delivered from any one of these source is considerably less than the combined amount. This eliminates discomfort, minimizes risk of injury to the skin, makes treatments safe for all skin types (not the case with most other lasers), and doesn't interfere with beard growth, making it extremely popular for men as well. These procedures can address the quality and appearance of the skin, diminish fine line wrinkles, remove unwanted hair and tighten of the skin... all done without surgery.

Similar technology now allows liposuction and body contouring to be performed non-invasively. Lost volume around lips, the chin, corners of the mouth, and cheeks, which create a tired and sad appearance, causes wrinkles and sagging, thus creating the illusion of premature ageing. This can now be replaced with fillers such as restelane or perlane, Botox is particularly effective for treating wrinkles around the eyes and the forehead as well as around the lips. Botox, fillers and lasers are complimentary and can create impressive results. It is important, however, that each patient has a detailed discussion with their plastic surgeon and creates an individualized treatment plan to best address problems and concerns. In skilled hands, these procedures are, fast, safe, extremely effective, have little or no downtime but a long duration, giving the face an almost immediate and lasting lift--- with no surgery.

"The New Year brings a new beginning, with renewed energy and spirit, an opportunity to choose to be our best selves. And certainly nothing can be more important than choosing the path to good heath and feeling good about ourselves" says Guy M. Rochman M.D. Department of Surgery at Harvard Medical School in Boston, and Chief of Plastic Surgery and Cosmetic Medicine at the new WorldPath Clinic international in Shanghai.

"Our clinic in Shanghai is very new and exciting - the first if it's kind in China. "Our team of plastic surgeons draws the best talent from the United States and Shanghai, many of whom have worked closely together for decades, and are excited to be bringing the highest quality of care to WorldPath Clinic International in Shanghai."
