Pediatric Ophthalmology

Children are not just small adults. Children experience a variety of eye problems, many quite distinct from adult eye problems. They cannot always say what is bothering them. They cannot always answer medical question, and are not always able to be patient and cooperative during medical examinations. Pediatric ophthalmologists focus on the development of the visual system and the various diseases that disrupt visual development in children, in addition to having expertise in managing the various ocular diseases that affect children.  Our pediatric ophthalmologists at New Vision Eye Clinic are trained, qualified, and experienced in all areas of pediatric ophthalmology.  The most common pediatric disorders we treat are: 

• Infections such as conjunctivitis (pink eye)
• Binocular eye disorders such as strabismus (cross eyes) and amblyopia (lazy eye)
• Refractive errors such as astigmatism, hyperopia (farsightedness) and myopia (shortsightedness)

Learning Difficulties

Some research indicates that disorders such as ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) share many common characteristics with certain childhood visual difficulties such as the inability to concentrate in class, the inability to give close attention to details, does not follow instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, and is often easily distracted.  Often children are misdiagnosed – a behavioral problem can actually be caused by a visual problem.  Visual focus greatly affects mental focus.  However, children rarely verbalize their visual difficulties.  The best way to detect possible visual irregularities is by a comprehensive eye exam.

In addition to diagnosis and treatment of your child’s visual difficulties, we can provide all of your child’s eyewear needs.  A full range of child-appropriate eyewear is available and a trained specialist can fit your child for either glasses or contact lenses in minimal time.
