Alongside China’s rise, becoming the 2nd largest economy and the biggest exporting country in the world in 2010, more and more merchants from every corner of the world are coming to China to find their business partners and suppliers and to seek new programs in which to invest. But they soon discover a big obstacle to success --- language. Although many local Chinese people can speak English, few of them can speak English in a professional and accurate manner. These foreign merchants want to know more about the Chinese market, government policies, and business culture. The Business Chinese learning market has emerged to cater to people like these in the past few years.
Through a short internet survey, I found that more and more Mandarin Chinese learning schools are offering Business Chinese courses. Business Mandarin Chinese lessons are mainly designed for business people who intend to develop their ability to use the Chinese language when conducting business in China. So Business Chinese is not only a language course but also an introduction to wider aspects of the business world in China, for example, Chinese government policy, law, and business customs and culture. These are subjects that only native Chinese teachers who have real business experience in China can teach. With practice and close attention to theory, students can learn how to deal with such culturally unfamiliar ways of doing business.
After all, language is just a tool for communication. When a businessman is making a deal with his Chinese counterparts, he will find that a little Chinese business terminology will go a long way. He will be in a better position to achieve his goal but he will also find that he has opened another window onto the biggest market in the world.
The popularity in Chinese language study after Shanghai EXPO 2010
The Shanghai Expo of 2010 caught the attention of people all over the world. More and more people want to learn about Chinese culture and some colleges have even started putting Chinese into their credits programmes.
Officials from China’s national office for teaching Chinese as a foreign language have said that “the popularity of Chinese language study has become a common phenomenon in the global communication system. In recent years, the numbers of people learning Chinese have increased very fast, with the numbers in Euro-American countries increasing by 40%. According to statistics, there were 30 million people in the world learning Chinese in 2003 but the number had increased to 100 million in 2010.
The linguist Professor Zhang said that the popularity of Chinese study across the world can be traced to a number of factors: First, as China's economy and trade has developed rapidly, every country in the world needs technical personnel who can speak Chinese; Second, with China’s economy so open to the world, Chinese culture has lifted its veil of mystery. It has become both fashionable and practical to learn Chinese; Third, China's international influence has increased rapidly and this makes people worldwide want to know more about modern China.
