Teaching English in Shanghai with Melissa Hellmann

EF English FirstIn my weekly blog, I’ll be sharing my favorite moments teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) in Shanghai: the struggles I traversed as a teacher, my favorite moments in the classroom and experiences that made me want to hit my head on the desk and take the next flight back to America.

There are many misconceptions of English teachers in Shanghai as being vagrants who like to party and travel; while this is “partially” true, ESL teachers are invariably here to broaden their experiences and to share their knowledge of the English Language with others. This column is for you, fellow teachers or teacher wannabes, to share your experiences, get teaching tips or to vent on that child who just won’t sit down and stop talking. In Shanghai English teachers don’t summon the image of a bitter old maid covered in chalk dust: we’re SHEXy, well-traveled, intellectual city folk.

You can follow my column each week by checking back on the SHEX Blogs News feed (above), or you can check the archive below. Lastly, to my fellow English Teachers: I want to get your feedback on a couple of things! Post your Reason for Becoming an English Teacher, and Tips for Saving Money as an English Teacher!!
