Another rainy friday update

Hi all,

Happy (but wet) Friday! Short message this week, work is just piled up. And the rain…geez. Luckily its just for today, or so says the weather reports I have read. Decent weather expected for the rest of the weekend and other than another day of showeres next week, the long weekend next week is supposed to be good too. So plan your trips now! In the meantime I will be on my perennial search for sunshine.

Wow, we have now 769 members as of this week. Amazing that we have this many people considering how little we publicise this group, but that’s cool. For those that want a bit more updates though you can become a fan of ShanghaiExpat.com by joining the new fan group at http://www.facebook.com/pages/ShanghaiExpatcom/74846230644?ref=mf where new info will be posted more often than I post, so click to join.

As for things this weekend and the coming week or so…

Saturday | April 24th, 9pm-late - Temptation in the Garden of Sin @ Sin Lounge happening Saturday Night . Live performers from Ibiza will be doing a performance ; Adam and Even at the Garden at Eden Sin. Live show with special DJ and other promotions this Saturday Night at Sin. Many in the Shanghai Expat community will be attending this to check it out. So those interested please contact Ocean Fu (ocean@shanghaiexpat.com) of Shanghai Expat for VIP table bookings. I believe SHXP will have a table. I will also be there with some friends so come join in the fun!

Little Face on Dong Hu Rd now open serving some 100 dishes. Been meaning to go out and check it out. Maybe some of our members can go and provide us all some feedback?

I DID check out the new Taco Loco on Fuming Rd last week. Their soft taco’s are quite good at 12rmb but the super burrito needs some work still as the large tortillas were a bit stale. (maybe not enough orders yet for the large ones). Sherpas delivers them so maybe you can all get a chance to try them out. Fresh salsa, decent guacamole and decent meat. Only complaint other than the tortilla being bit stale was the Carnitas may have been a bit salty for my taste. Located at 185 Fuming Rd, its pretty conveniently located from Jing An or HuaiHai areas.

Next week I will check out another new place near there that serves crepes. ☺

Speaking of foods, you all really should take advantage of City Weekend’s Gourmet month specials around town before the end of the month. I did try out the offerings at Casa Mia, which is just down the street from my office. Probably would not have gone in but it was quite a good deal and other than the initial cocktail which was rather bland and not suited to my tastes, the rest of the meal was good. Anyhow, may be checking out other restaurants this coming week so maybe I will have more to say about that, but kudos to City Weekend’s events an foods people for putting this promotion together to be a win-win-win deal. The magazine gets adverts, the restaurants get business, and the rest of us get to taste some great places with special offerings this month! More info on Gourmet month: http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/events/41437/?most_viewed=1

Tacos and other random observations

Tacos.

Or rather a taco. I had a really good one last night at a new little place i walked by. Here i was thinking i was meeting my friends for a Shanghainese dinner at BaoLuo on Fuming rd when i got greeted by a staff member of this new place and i saw at the corner of my eye, the menu board listing "Taco 12rmb" ! The place looked a bit like a well lit juice bar but I figured i was a bit hungry and still had half an hour to wait so what the heck. The place is called Taco Loco and is already delivered by Sherpas! Their menu is simple: Soft tacos, Burritos, Super Burritos, and Quesadilla; all available with beef carne asada, grilled chicken, or pork carnitas. they have fresh salsa and greens, and offer sour cream topping. MMMMM! At 12 rmb, the soft taco was decently filling for a snack and a great intro to their Steak carne asada offering as the meat was good quality and tasted quite good! Cannot wait to go back and see how the Burritos are, which include rice, black beans and even guacomole! :) Located at 185 Fumin Rd ; they deliver nearby their store free by calling 51032348, or via Sherpas for longer distances. Oh they offer a selection of Fresh squeezed juices as well.

New English Paper?

As i got to the metro station on the way to work today, a gal was passing out a free paper to all the non-chinese looking people. I took a quick look and it was a new English paper called the Global times. Given that I look too Chinese i suppose, I was not offered a copy, but still, its good to see more selection out there. You can take a look at their website though to get a feeling that they are serious and want to push this paper. Good luck to them. http://www.globaltimes.cn/

Eco-Design Fair report

I attended the Eco Design fair last weekend as an exhibitor for our water filters, but also as an attendee as I walked through the 40+ exhibitors' displays and checked out eco-friendly products. I still really like the business called Live Green, who sells natural fiber cloths and eco-friendly gifts and products online. Last show they had one booth, this show they had FOUR! Amazing selection fo stuff. i liked the solar mobile charger pack the best as it allowed the sunlight or be stored in a charge pack and then plugged into virtually any mobile phone or mps player with some dozen different power attachements. Another was their vesion of the washer ball, a spring loaded wash device that gently pounds the clothing in the washing machine eliminating the need for detergent. Here is the site for this biz: http://www.livegreen.com.cn/en/index.asp

Sadly not all the stuff mentioned is on the English site so you may want to just check the Chinese page for more info.

And last but not least a cool video link courtesy of my good friend Li:

foreigners calling natives foreigner?

Link: http://blog.foolsmountain.com/2009/04/15/how-should-foreigners-feel-about-being-called-%E9%AC%BC%E5%AD%90-%E9%AC%BC%E4%BD%AC-%E8%80%81%E5%A4%96-etc/

I always found it amusing when my parents (of Chinese heritage) referred to non-chinese as "foriegners" 外国人, while living in the US. It seems i am not the only one as Fools Mountain a blog about China and such made mention of it this week too!

So how about it? My expat friends are mixed about the usage of "laowai" and whether or not they take it as offensive. I personally see that the term is neutral and that it depends on the usage. Better than the terms used in Hong Kong any how "guailow" 鬼老 which has a much more negative connotation even before considering the usage.

Anyhow any thoughts?

Translation :)

Translations at its best!

Just had to laugh at this really well made sign at a restaurant out near Brilliance West Mall. I guess depending on how one reads the actual works in Chinese, the English translation could be considered correct. But I suppose its better than the Error Message translation sign I saw on another blog. Anyhow amusing nonetheless. :)

FFriday Update 04-17-09 Formula One Weekend!

Wet? Not wet? Not good for formula race cars to worry about but at least its warmer! And either way it WILL be warm (yes, yes, back to my weather thoughts ;)) this weekend so be prepared as we expect highs in the mid 20’s this weekend! ☺ Alas spring starts and summer will rear its hot head.

Weird week this week as it started out quiet but then got busy by mid week. Given this pattern, it will be a great weekend! Had a chance to check out a new club on hengshan Rd called Soho and despite its billing to be a foreigner’s bar/ club, its distinctly Chinese in the way its put together. I do give the management credit though for getting their staff professionally honed to provide adequate service at their pre-opening/ grand opening event, something many clubs fail at. But the place is kinda tacky in my opinion.

Another more fun pre-opening I attended was Eduardo’s new Vargas Grill tasting where I got to hang with certain food writers from several expat magazine and such, to taste some preliminary dishes Eduardo is considering for his place. Some 16 dishes and 30 wines later…it was an experience. Vargas Grill will be located at where the late-Bambou was on Dong Ping Rd and will open soon.

Overheard...

While sitting at New York Style Pizza last night, a gruff middle-aged American walked in and ordered two slices to go. The gal behind the counter sends the slices upstairs to heat up as always and the American guy stands around impatient as hell.

Meanwhile, another guest at a table requests his leftover slices be packed to go so the waitress picks those up and takes it over to the front counter to pack up. As the counter gal finishes packing them, the gruff American guy at the counter grabs it to go. The counter gal screams and pulls the bag away explaining in Chinese that this was NOT his pizza and that his was coming from the oven upstairs, even pointing upstairs. the gruff American guy gets angry and walks out of the place slamming the sliding doors behind him.

The counter gal then brings the leftover pizza to the guest at the table while another gal brought the heated slices downstairs only to find no customer to accept them.

It was amusing to see the American guy get so wound up. The counter gal's body language clearly indicated he was wrong about something. Given the absolute lack of native language skills he had, I can understand why he must have been flustered, but the enourmous level of class he showed in stomping out the place and slamming the door borders on a level of idiocy reserved for jackass expats that give teh rest of us a bad name...anyhow. Moral of the story, learn Chinese if you want to live here b/c its easier than teaching all of them English.

And oh yeah, New York Style Pizza is quite good. :)

Friday Facebook Update Crosspost

I hate it when work gets in the way of life but alas this had been a hellish week. Reminder to all, do not trust your HR department to remind you that your Residence and Work Permits are expiring. Just did the mad dash to complete my renewal process and it wasn’t pretty. But I got it in just under the wire. Whew~! So now that I am legal again for another year, I am back catching up on all the work I left on my desk as I waited in lines at the labor bureau and Entry Exit offices. But I will update my blog soon, with details of these processes, for those in need of doing so.

The sunshine disappeared. Yet if it were not for these swings back and forth from cold to nice, Spring would likely skip Shanghai all-together as it really would just jump straight into Summer. Good for those who like heat, but I prefer keeping cooler. But still, wish I could see the Sunshine more.

Long weekend this weekend as officially its Tomb Sweeping festival and many locals will go pay respect to their ancestors. For those of us not going anywhere, it will be a quiet weekend unless one is trying to travel. The trains and buses are packed! Anyhow, Monday is a day off for most local companies.

Its April! It is almost time for the third edition of the Eco-Design Fair! This time, the event will be held at Anken Green, an environmental warehouse rebuild/refurb that is now an office building with a cool event space. It will be April 18, so, please, those interested should pencil it into their calendars.

ShanghaiExpat.com fans can join the new fan group at http://www.facebook.com/pages/ShanghaiExpatcom/74846230644?ref=mf where new info will be posted more often than I post, so click to join.

Gourmet Month. April is Gourmet month here in Shanghai as City Weekend has arranged a selection of restaurants across Shanghai to offer up special price fixed menues as a discount to allow diners to come in and try them out. Different restaurants have different specials happening. For details, check out City Weekend’s site at: http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/articles/blogs-shanghai/sh-gourmet-month/introducing-the-food-festival-to-make-you-eat-out-every-single-night/ A review of one restaurant’s offerings was posted to Shanghaiist already: http://shanghaiist.com/2009/03/31/gourmet_month.php . Join in the fun and enjoy the food!

Saturday evening, April 4, 7pm @ Ruby Red Cellars presents a special opportunity to taste a series of Chateauneuf Du Pape wines. A good Chateauneuf-du-Pape is first and foremost a wine-lover's wine. A classic Chateauneuf can offer the fruit flavors that most wine drinkers love so well, ranging from cherry and blueberry to deep, rich raspberry. It can also have intense aromas of violets and other flowers, woven through with whiffs of earth and Provencal herbs, spices and a little of what is politely termed "barnyard”. A tasting of 2005 & 2006 vintages will take place this Saturday evening at Ruby Red. RSVP for this event by calling 62343031 or email info@rubyred.com.cn today. Cost per person is 350rmb.

April 18- Eco-Design Fair @ Anken Green > This third edition of the eco conscious fair will be held at a new venue this time, Anken Green. More details at: http://www.ecodesignfair.cn/

April 23, Thursday @ The China Cristal Awards will be holding its first annual advertising and media festival in Shanghai. For more info: http://www.chinacristal.com
