Friday Newsletter (cross post from Facebook) 05/22/09

And the Spring weather continues with beautiful Sunshine and not so much heat. Love it.

Sorry late again, preparing for repatriation is never easy and with the clock ticking, I am running out of time for everything. Yes the rumours are true, I am headed back home for awhile soon so hopefully you all can come out for some of these events and continue to support the Shanghai Expat Community while I am away. Next Wednesday night mixer may be the last one I host for awhile (air ticket yet to be confirmed but…) so hopefully you all can pop on by.

Ok, enough of that, back to the real content of the newsletter…

Dragon Boat Festival is next weekend with Thrusday Friday off but THIS weekend, ShanghaiExpat and IMandarin again join up to host the 2009 International Dragon Boat Race in QingPu. Come out and watch! I will actually be rowing this year, somehow got talked into this… More info at : http://www.shanghaiexpat.com/index.php?name=microsites&file=09_05_19#dragon

A mystery warehouse party is in the works according to the folks at Shanghaiist. May 28th…hmmm, interesting. http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=83587035826&ref=ts

Oh yeah, my friend Charles’ Crepe and Gelato place is open for business on FuMing Rd. Its becoming quite the little food & entertainment street there with Bar 88, Cantina Agave, Taco Loco, GuYi and Otto on the other end, and of course this new place VOILA BISTRO. Have been there a few times now and the crepes while not authentic French, are delicious! And the gelato? Fresh made wonderful flavours! You HAVVE TO try the Strawberry one as its made only from fresh strawberries and tastes nothing like that store bought stuff. Anyhow, located at 173 Fumin Lu (near Julu Lu - just north of Cantina Agave and south of OTTO). Official grand opening is Sat night but they are already open now so go check it out!

Went back to taco Loco again and they seem to have a QC issue as sometimes the flavor is dead on, others way salty. Sigh. Still pretty decent, and WAY better a venture than their other store City Diner which has just turned to crap. Sadly.

Dell 9 Mini Running Mac OSX

Dell Mini 9 with Mac-OSX

About a month ago, I happen to run into Lawrence from Computer Solutions as he was walking back from dinner. He was carrying a very small looking net-book with an Apple label so I asked him about it. He was all but glad to show off his new “Dell Mini 9 with Mac OSX” It seems its been his hobby for awhile now to try and load Apple’s OSX operating system onto a non-Mac product, and he had done so successfully with a lot of work in the past year but the Dell Mini 9 was the first one he felt was truly compatible and was straightforward to load. AND, on top of that, the compatibility for accessories seemed to all be there. And so I was intrigued, and 2 weeks later, decided that I had to try one out.

A few weeks later, Lawrence and his staff hooked me up with on, preloaded with the software I needed so I could test it out in real life, not just a quick look like the first time. My first impressions were that upon powering on, OSX loaded pretty quickly and that this computer was faster than my older G4powerbook. Which is true since this Atom based unit is pretty darned quick. My second impression though was that the keyboard was SO small. A week later, I still have typo issues with this unit, even as I type this up on a 767 enroute back to Shanghai.

But the convenience of carrying this computer and its decent 3 hour charge for use is not bad at all. And even worth the initial getting used to of this keyboard.

UPDATE:

After another week of use, the fingers are getting used to this keyboard. Though the stray track pad touch still throws me occasionally, I am finding for light use days, it is certainly a refreshing change to only bring a small 2 pound unit half the size of my Powerbook.

I would say though that if one has large or fat fingers? Forget it…this keypad like most 9” mini net-books really IS small.
Found a few quirks in the system though as I have now been using this for over a week. Mostly small things, like:

1) The track pad cannot be turned off when a mouse is present. Have not tried powering on with a mouse so maybe its just not able to recognize when I hot-connect while the unit is on.
2) The sleep mode still has issues occasionally and will not wake from sleep
3) In MS Word, when both the mouse and trackpad are present, the cursor arrow remains on the side of the page while the text cursor continues onto the page.

Like mentioned before though, nothing catastrophic, just minor annoyances and quirks. Will keep reporting if anything else comes up. ☺

If you had to redesign China's classic pink train ticket, what would you add? What would you take off? Here is blogger Chris H's take:

Water for living Healthy

Drink lots of water. As the weather gets hotter here in Shanghai, be sure to get plenty of fluids or the humidity and heat will literally dry you out. Ideally, you should be drinking some 8 glasses of water a day on top of the water you can get from foods. That is something like one and a half liters of water we should be drinking. If you are not, when your body sweats as it gets hotter, you will become dehydrated.

Best bet, pure healthy drinking water, free of pollutants, healthy amounts of minerals without heavy metals, and a mildly alkaline pH to best fit your body’s needs. While thatis not always possible, getting the best bottled waters or installing an Atlantis Water Purifier to treat your tap water making it healthy to drink can help minimize your exposure to bad water.

Probably makes the most difference in growing kids as they need a lot of water to keep up their growth, both physically and mentally. Water helps regulate temperature, carry nutrients to the body’s cells, and eliminate waste from our bodies. Make sure they get plenty of water, especially when they are active as they tend to be more dynamic than adults.
