i'll be looking for work as an English teacher and possibly returning to America after i find a sponser and paperwork is submitted to immigration for processing of a work visa..once notified of my approval, i'll return.
most likely be staying at a guest house the whole time.

Guess would be between USD1000 and USD$2000. That will cover housing, transportation and food. If you live locally and utilize public transport then you should be fine. Shopping, nightlife and foreign restaurants will add to your monthly expenditures greatly.
Don't bring traveller checks. Bring cash.
Why not look for a job from the US? Many people do that and they seem to have luck. Save yourself the airfare and montly living expenses.
