Sports in Shanghai - NEW CAPOEIRA PLACE AND TIMES!

Slymon - Nov 08, 2005 - 01:57 PM
Post subject: NEW CAPOEIRA PLACE AND TIMES!
me again posting up for those who don't know:

we now get together every saturday AND SUNDAY at 3:30PM, still in LUXUN PARK, right next to HONGKOU FOOTBALL STADIUM which is a stop on the LINE 3 train.

our (NEW!!!) spot is on the very top of "bird mountain", which is on the left if you enter at the north gate (where the big "hollywood" style letters say LU XUN PARK). go in the gate, veer left, straight ahead is a hill with lots of trees and a small placard saying "bird mountain" and something about the birds and feeling of being very peaceful since the ancient time. go UP bird mountain. there are many paths up the mountain, but the view from the top is the same. it's much better up there, better surface and much less invasive spectators.

my phone number is 6507 6724, email is wackname@yahoo.com, phone, email or PM me if you want.

oh and on sunday there were people looking for us ON THE HILL and couldn't find us?! go to THE TOP! there is only one top. if you see a hairy man there doing strange things, that is me.

oh yeah also for those who don't know "classes" are FREE Shocked

so did irlana"s bag show up sunday?

not sure if people fancy making the trip to pudong at the weekends - but my appartment complex has a dance/aerobics area we could rent for cheap - its warm, dry, no broken glass, no spit and no thieves!
what do you think?
dave
Slymon - Nov 15, 2005 - 04:38 PM
Post subject:
it's Yolanda dude, and her bag didn't show up. no way i'm going to pudong to rent some little room! you should get a pudong crew together to practice there during the week!

oh Woy came on sunday (we had an awesome session! woy and jax are now both masters of constantly circling around behind, over and under) and he mentioned a Drum N Bass thing happening at pegasus on saturday night, said to tell "the others".

Jax was a bit scared of the broken glass, and Nat was scared of the thieves, but it's still a cool spot. you just need to play a bit more until your palms get tougher, and not bring important stuff/watch out for your bag! also, up the top (the very top, not the dirty but nicely shaped almost-top) it is much brighter, so dem teeves'r easier te see.

oh yeah we're moving it to 3pm this week! saturday and sunday.

hi dave,
simon's leaving soon and when it gets real cold and wintry and stuff i reckon i'd be up for a bit of warm dry spit free -ness.
how much would that room cost? i guess we'd all have to chip in, eh.

dave and others!

i'm not going to beijing for another week or so, so hopefully i'll see you at 3ish in luxun park, sat & sun.

tell everyone whose phone number you know, because i don't have everyone's numbers.

Post subject:
Yo Slymon!!

i'm going to join you guys this Sunday at 3.30pm with some friends along as well, cool..
Slymon - Nov 27, 2005 - 01:21 PM
Post subject:
good stuff connie.

so for those who were there yesterday (saturday) and those who weren't:

people are talking about finding a gym somewhere. diego has found a place in pudong which sounds expensive. dave has found another one which sounds cheap. some people think a gym is better in winter (cleaner, warmer, safer, etc). some people think it's unecessary since it wouldn't be free anymore and people couldn't just show up whenever they felt like it (we're at the park these days until well after dark, some people don't show up until 5 or 6!) and also if it was inside somewhere there would be no more random people walking past and wondering about capoeira.

after all we are in china, and chinese people bug out when they see capoeira! so far we have one regular chinese guy (Jax!) and some more joining soon....I think it's good for people to see it - even though I sometimes hate being stared at and talked about.

anyway just discuss it and work it out, i told diego and others to come here to talk about it.
Slymon - Nov 27, 2005 - 01:23 PM
Post subject:
oh. we will still be in luxun park today, and next saturday and sunday, for sure.
natty - Nov 28, 2005 - 04:18 PM
Post subject:
Hi
so yeah dave's place is apparently 50kuai an hour in his appartment building in pudong near the jinmao ( orrite fo' sum, innit!!!!) adn he reckons there's a stereo (i believe him!!) and also he reckons that if we just pay for an hour then we'll probably be able to jsut hang for ages longer more often than not!!!
and diego's is just the next line 2 stop down at / near dongchang lu shan in pudong and more expensive - but there places to wash and shower and stuff?!&^@(*$^$@#&^ if you're into that kinda thing!!!!
ummmm
i'm into doing capoeira outside....apart from our little park ther eis roy's and evelyn's appartments building that has a little lake with a sweet covered wodden deck outside and lovely!
i reckon thaat'd be great - also its near the medditerrainian cafe with da best humus in china!!!!

OK SO MY OPINION IS THAT WE KEEP IT OUTSIDE UNTIL - AND IF WE EVER FEEL - ITS COMPLETELY NECESSARY
next week the chiense breakl dancers are coming back and they live areound luxun park too,

I"M INTO KEEPING IT FREE!!!!!
without charges there is a lot moer freedom....but yeah - i understand not everyone is into getting cold and dirty!

oh my....are we gunna have a split this soon!?!?!??!

yeah bring it on!
my outside crew will kick all y'alll insinde weiner arses anyday!!!

hehehhehehehh!

LOVE!

PS - the address for the reggae nite on thursday is
C's Bar 685 dingxi lu , near fa hua zhen lu
free entry
drinks 10kuai
see yous punks there!!!!

love nat

Hey, I've heard of this Capoeira thing. What exactly is it? I've seen clips of it on T.V. every now and then. Somebody told me it's a martial art, but I doubt you could defend yourself from any serious attacker using it. Is it a form of break-dancing?
daveh0 - Nov 29, 2005 - 12:19 PM
Post subject:
the sun is still shining, i think its good to keep it free until it gets really cold...
then maybe we can spoil ourselves with the luxury of the dance studio, (and bar)
ive seen panderos for 10rmb, shall i get you some!
c u at the reggae
dave
Slymon - Nov 29, 2005 - 03:28 PM
Post subject:
panderos for 10rmb? they must be really crap!!! we'll have two! (seriously.)

sorry armie i really can't be bothered answering your question! some of the capoeira out there is pretty nasty, some is more like breakdancing.
kutsela - Dec 01, 2005 - 10:10 PM
Post subject:
Hey everybody, im moving to Shanghai in two months, I REALLY hope capoeira get togethers will still be going on. And outside or inside does not matter to me, it doesnt really get that cold in Shanghai, does it? (then again me being from Russia, what's cold is a very relative subject) PS. Is it cool for me to join you guys with no prior experience of Capoeira? (But serious desire and determination to learn as much as I can) -Alisa
armie - Dec 02, 2005 - 05:10 PM
Post subject:
Slymon, I'm confused.

What do you mean by nasty? You mean they really suck at the moves, or do you mean "nasty=good" as some people use the term? What kind of shoes do you need? Is this something that's a good workout?
jax - Dec 02, 2005 - 09:03 PM
Post subject:
Hi!everybody,
I think now I want to exercise at the outside place.
.i want to be together with the nature.
.i don't think the ground is dirty (that dust could be washed after gathering). so the dirty feeling is just mental trouble! Through exercising at outside will overcome this mind problem!!
.i want to be used to use capoeira training way for reality use.
.lunxun park is more convenient to go, no traffic problem and no money to pay rent.
.of course, have outside place near the lunxun park is better than our recent place is welcomed too! (no broken glass, no rain)
Chinese martial art have traditional type and developed type. I like the traditional type because it is original with old culture! Now capoeira is confronted with the same situation! I think.
sincerely
jax

Post subject:
Alisa - im sure you will be very welcome to join, there are plenty of beginners too!
i'm a big fan of the outdoors, but its getting a bit cold these days... maybe for end of dec or january we could go indoors.
when is our mestre off to beijing?! sorry i wasnt there saturday - i was sick in bed.
dave
Slymon - Dec 05, 2005 - 03:16 PM
Post subject:
i'll be gone as soon as i pack my bag and buy my ticket. tomorrow or the next day i reckon. oh and i know you're joking but i guess it's compulsory for me to say "don't call me mestre!"

armie by nasty i mean cruel and dangerous, which can be a good or bad thing depending on what you want. good capoeira should be paradoxical, both fun and dangerous, a fight and a dance, with nice friendly people and nasty cruel people playing.

it is a good workout, and you don't need any special clothes, although i wouldn't recommend skirts or high heels.

next weekend at least people will still be meeting in luxun park, saturday and sunday at 3pm.

this was just a quick reply so there are no smiley faces.

oh and we've got some plants for you to take over to grub-town, in a few weeks!

hey dave i hope you can come this weekend because we want a pandeiro! and the pleasure of you company of course.

we are still playing in the park at 3pm on sat and sun - it rained on saturday so we found a nice dry spot under cover on the platform (mezanine) at the hongkou football stadium (door 9.) it was good so i guess we'll go there again if it rains
EVERYBODY - its not that bad outside, it s cold to begin but you know that you warm up pretty fast playing, and glove and beanies mean we are braver and do more head stands!!!! yolandas gettin' her head stands down pat!

hey nat,
my friend from ireland arrived here friday, he came by train, took him 6 weeks and 15 bottles of wodka, he stopped off in mongolia on a yak milking trip, we had to hose him down when he arrived. we had a few drinks and got a bit too twisted friday night.
Will be there this saturday though - with pandeiros and everything!

hello there children!

same deal again this weekend, 3pm, in the park or at the stadium if it's raining (read nat's post above).

dave if you book that room let us know, leonardo, diego and lots of other people are keen to play and won't come to the park because it's too cold.

just so y'all know i've got no problem with the room idea i'm just not going to organise anything myself because i'm a lazy-ass and i'm from new zealand so i don't mind the cold. like you guys, if i had to go across town to train in a park in the cold i would just stay home! but luxun park is basically my back yard so that's where i'll be tomorrow and the next day.

love!

It's really important for me to keep up my training. Unfortunately, I only found a dance studio but I don't suppose them to train (or play) real Capoeira there(btw. it's expensive as hell).

I was looking for a capoeira place since a monthin Shanghai and now that I found you I really want to joggar capoeira with you!!! I'm French and I learnt capoeira in Africa, PLEASE tell me when you will play together the next time. By the way, may I come?
Do you have some instrument like a berimbau an atabaque or even a pandero?
Hope to see you.

Hello!
I have nothing against you guys writing in French, but the one inconvenient I see, and it's not inconvenient for me, is that if Transparent cannot answer, then Gilles you are in trouble, since no one else will be able to answer if you only ask/make comments in French.... just a thought....

Hello fellow capoeirstas,

I am also living in Suzhou at the moment - if anyone here is interested in practices just email me. I come to Shanghai every two weeks for four days and would like to join your group on Sundays. It has been awhile since I last played. I will not be able to come this Sunday, but I will keep an eye out for posts about the following Sunday.

cheers

Practice this Thursday, tomorrow! at Yanlord Gardens, in Pudong. They have a gym, and we ususally rent one of the rooms in the gym. This time it'll be from 19.10 to 20.30. You can enter the Yanlord Gardens from their entrance on Pucheng Lu (near DongChang Lu)
