I think it's a great site. A lot of helpful people and lots of interesting information. I've met quite a few people from the site and having shexpat in common, made you feel less like strangers and also gave conversation a healthy boost until the initial unfamiliarity wore off. Shexpat is definately an essential site for finding your feet in Shanghai. One of the most telling testaments to this is a friend of mine saying that when he first arrived here in Shanghai he often googled things of interest and was referred to Shexpat, until finally he realised it was just easier to search for info about Shanghai here. It's also a great way to become exposed to people from varied walks of life who you may never meet under normal circumstances.

Over the past few weeks I have not only met many fine people through Shanghai Expat, but have been able to hire several employees. I was so tired over the past 3 years of always having to hire friends of a friend or through a friend of a friend that now I can really find the individuals with the qualifications needed for my jobs in Shanghai. Thank you Shanghai Expat, you provide an invaluable service to the international community.

Yo. I found an apartment or rather an agent----then I posted and found a better agent for this fall---the next China adventure. But when I need medical help---the site was invaluable. So if you think you are not making a difference with this site----wrong----you are!!! I have still struggled this trip to Shanghai---the cultural differences are huge to say the least. But at least on the forum----you know you are not alone. I have attended some events and plan on attending more. I am headed back to the States in few weeks but I will be returning in August. Now I have some friends from the events----to returning will be much easier---something to look forward to. Thanks Ed and the Sat. coffee crew---made my week much better.

In April, an acquaintance had her mother go for hip surgery and badly needed A negative blood, we had ran out of volunteers.. then we appealed here.. and what a response we got ! Its thanks to the site that the lady is fine today... So many people, who went out of their way to donate blood, so many others who asked after her, and wished her well.. Definitely Sh Expat is the best.

Don't tell anyone, but Shanghaiexpat has more information and is more usefull than any book or China website you can find!
In one place you can find out from where to buy bread to where to find a partner, or a dog, or a free cat!!
You can discuss health, love, friendship and even how is the life in this so different country!!
I think the government should put a notice in this website"
"Be Aware: ShanghaiExpat is an addictive website. Commom sense is needed or you will be stucked in the computer forever..."

I didn't find a room-mate or the love of my life through ShanghaiExpat. I haven't bought or sold anything through the site either. In fact, I probably don't use the site to it's fullest potential.

However, I have built up such an extensive and interesting social [and sometimes business] network that my initial transition and culture shock seems like a distant memory. After two years living and working in Shanghai, most of my close friendships [and let's face it, we all need lots of friends] originated from ShanghaiExpat. I'm told it's also very handy to find information, sell stuff or find a Chinese language tutor. That may be true but, for me, the enormous benefits have been the varied and interesting friendships [many will prosper into lifelong relationships, I'm sure] that have been formed since I arrived.

As far as I'm concerned, that is more than enough. Thanks to ShanghaiExpat. Keep up the great work!

I originally posted this in Guest Book but I think it's more appropriate for Testimonials:

Thanks to ShanghaiExpat, my visit to Shanghai from Nov 29 to Dec 13 was the best trip I've ever taken. ShanghaiExpat is easily the most informative, active, and meaningful forum for expatriots in China on the internet.

Moderator Yu888 and others gave me answers to questions BEFORE my trip. When I arrived, I went to the Coffee Bean get-together at Zhongshan Park inside the Cloud Nine Mall the very next day, and there was Yu888 (and many others) giving me important advice that made my stay very smooth over the next 2 weeks (e.g., what banks, money exchange, interesting places, what to watch out for, etc.). After coffee and tea, a group of 8 (led by Yu888) ate lunch at a restaurant inside the mall, which prepared me for what to expect in Shanghai in terms of food, service, and price.

After that first lunch, my language exchange partner, Julie1984, whom I met on ShanghaiExpat in the Learning Languages forum, met up with me at the Cloud Nine Mall. Little did I know at the time that she would be the key to my stay in Shanghai. Julie is a graduate student at East China Normal University and wants to improve her English so she can go abroad in Europe to do her Ph.D. She is extremely warm and generous and took me to many places like the Old City, Bund, French Concession, Xin Tian Di, her university (which was my favorite place, if you can believe that), Muse and Baby Face (I like Muse better). She taught me how to use the Metro, bus, and taxi. Julie is not motivated by money but rather by a genuine sense of empathy and compassion and a desire to improve her English WHILE making new friends. She spent an enormous amount of her precious time for me. I believe she and I will be life friends, and I would like to recommend her to others on this forum.

Because of my super positive experience in Shanghai, I now intend to return next year with the purpose of setting up a test prep school focusing on SAT, GRE, LSAT, GMAT, and TOEFL. My plan is to live semi-permanently in Shanghai. My conclusion is that this unexpected chain of positive events started with this forum.

Shanghaiexpat is out of this world - which is what makes it so good, to step back and share experiences - the nasty and the plesant that this city throws up everyday. It's for all the introverted key-tappers to be a bigger personality than they are and for others to just be themselves. Its the yellow-pages of the school of hard knocks and it provides caution and advice so we expats are smarter collectively than we can be on our own. It's an agony aunt and a botherhood and sisterhood and just a good neighbourhood to hang out.

I got a lot of good information here and spent lots of time reading and reading, I have lived in Beijing for 4 years and am now in London getting ready to return to China after a year. I didn't realize how different SH was when compared to Beijing. Aside from where to get good beer and the most important thing you have done for me, was offer me a link to the expat chemist as Parkview hospital, because during this year I have been in the UK, I became an insulin dependant diabetic. I used search and came up with a link and an email address which allowed me to communicate with the chemist directly and find out that my particular kind of Insulin was not readily available, she gave me a list of what WAs easily available and the pricing, and I was able to make the change over while still here in the UK so I knew I would not have any really adverse reactions.

I was also able to adjust my budget accordingly as the pricing was about three times higher than I had estimated.

so cheers to you alll for the hard work you do, aside from where to get cheese, and good beer, you have such a variety of information out there, that this has got to be one of the most comprenehsive resources that can be found!
