which area? I joined fitness first, even though they only have one location (plaza 66) as they offer the most classes. i joined a 'family' package, (me and husband) and it was about 6000rmb for a year for both of us. it's also an international memberships, which means i can use any fitness first branch in the world, which is excellent if you travel a lot, as they have branches everywhere!

alexander gym is way too expensive (10000rmb) and service is the worst and the walls, ceilings and carpets are mouldy...gross

will's gym has several locations and are overall, ok, but not sure of their membership fees

physical only charges about 2000rmb per yr for membership, but i didn't join them as the staff were totally rude to me. but they also have many locations

physical raised their price, from 2200 per yr to 3000+. i'm also looking for reasonably priced gym, in xjh area, anyone know of a good one?
nettyli - Oct 09, 2006 - 09:28 AM
Post subject:
is physical not good enough? i know they have a big one opposite the gateway mall...never been to any of their classes, are they any good?
didarx79 - Oct 09, 2006 - 09:52 AM
Post subject:
physical is really good, good machines and classes. esepcially great that they have seperate levels for men & women, which i prefer. i go to that one in mei luo cheng. but isn't 3000+ per year a bit expensive? that's why i'm looking for other options.
nettyli - Oct 09, 2006 - 10:25 AM
Post subject:
i don't think so. can you use it any time, any day? some memberships may be cheaper, but will restrict you from using it during peak hours for example...not good, if you are working regular office hours, and can go only after or before work. Has anyone tried Mega Fit??
didarx79 - Oct 09, 2006 - 10:28 AM
Post subject:
yes, that's the price for anytime.
nettyli - Oct 09, 2006 - 10:40 AM
Post subject:
i think physical is already cheaper than Fitness first, Alexander Gym, and maybe Will's Gym. Try Megafit..or some hotel or service aprtment gyms may have packages you can buy which may or may not work out cheaper. I've heard Ambassy Club mentioned often too...try them...
Selphnir - Oct 09, 2006 - 10:59 AM
Post subject:
Well, as I mentioned on another thread, if you get a member to sponsor/refer you, there's a discount with Physical, when I joined with 2 other people referred by some other guy it was 2400 rmb/yr. As far as I know, it's anytime. I generally go to the people's square location myself, I like the facility better then the Xuijiahui location.

I'd be happy to refer you guys as I do get a bonus as well Very Happy

Actually it's not me who is going to join the gym, my bf would like to join the gym, he is really a gym person. Last time he went to a gym that near Huai Hai Rd, they charge 500RMB per month, he told me that's not reasonable, and i really have no idea about this. I know that he really wants to go to the gym to work out again. I would like to know whether there is any place which is not so bad also have reasonable price.
nettyli - Oct 09, 2006 - 11:09 AM
Post subject:
oh actually, i have a friend who joined physical (opposite to Gateway) some time ago and has not been once!!! she works too much!! She is looking to sell her membership at a discount. she hasn't even had time to go in to get the photo ID so all they have is a name...anyone could claim to be her, and get the card...if there is anyone interested, i can ask her for more details.

Is there a one near XTD?

800RMB/3months is great, good price but the location is too far away, hopefully there is one is near downtown and the price is also resonable.

I think we paid 1900 for two people for six months at Gubei Gym. I've only used it once though...bad bad...oh and no swimming pool (you have to buy a separate membership for the pool).

the pool at will's gym required you to wear a swim cap, or else you're not allowed to swim there. does this rule apply to other swimming pools?

Not so sure about this one. I don't think Fitness First in Australia accept these types of memberships.

Hey Everyone!!
I have just recently arrived in Shanghai from Australia. I am only here for 2 months for work but I am wanting to sign up to a gym. I haven't had a chance to orientate myself or have a good look around yet, but I am in Lu Wan and looking for a gym that is walking distance or a short cab ride from here. I need a gym that offers a monthly membership and is reasonably priced. If anyone could help me out that would be great =D
Thanks Heaps!!

One Wellness is on Yan Ping Lu and so there will be no taxi ride (time is money ?)this place is the cleanest and most modern i have seen in Shanghai. They are changing machines that look brand new for even newer more advanced models, you can not say that in Shanghai. It may be more pricy but they have a deal 2500 for 4 months summer memebrship with rivera events. They have a garden for sunbathing and drinking smoothies from their cafe. COOL

Just visited One Wellness and I have to say that I did not understand the hype about it. Yes it's clean. Yes they have great machines. But it's tiny so they try to put as many machines as they can into the small space. You can literally shake hands with the guy running next to you.

I like Fitness First though again it's a small space and no swimming pool.

Will's Gym are ok. They offer a 6 month membership for 1300rmb. The one on Luban road has a swimmimg pool.

Shanghai Boot Camp. Been willing to join for ages - as it's walking distance from home - but can never get myself out of bed early enough.

WILL's is terrible! At least based on my experience at the Tianshan branch on Fuquan Rd.

First of all, the sales guy told me a bunch of outright lies when we signed up. Like how I could use the swimming pool all year round. That there was a full-time Indian teacher doing the yoga classes (nope, only local Chinese). Later on I couldn't find him, hopefully he was fired...

Yeah, the swim cap rule was annoying, especially because most locals ignored it but the staff still tried to randomly enforce.

The outdoor pool was open for an absurdly short portion of the year. I think it only opened at the end of June after closing in mid-September the previous year.

The desk staff were either rude or non-responsive like the xiaojie in low-class restaurants.

We were told we would receive complimentary towels, which we never did, for a bunch of BS reasons.

If you wanted to reserve a space in the evening yoga or other class, you had to call them within an exact timeframe, like from 6-7 PM, which is inconvenient and stressful because everyone has to call them then.

Hey,
I've been considering joining Physical in XuJiaHui as I'm really only interested in somewhere with free weights, a few basic machines, and some cardio equipment. Couldn't care less about classes/pools/staff and all that, just want to be in and out and do my thing.
I stopped by the gym the other day just to check it out and found that none of the staff were able to speak English. As my Chinese is conversational at best, I was reluctant to sign anything. I was quoted 1900rmb for one year though, which sounds pretty good to me. I'm wondering if anyone out there could give me some info on this gym because I just couldn't get much info out of these people due to the language barrier. More specifically, what does the membership include? Are there any surprises that I should be aware of? Is the gym typically overcrowded?

Any information you may be able to provide is much appreciated.

call me at 13816642137 or pm me for more details. gym is cleaned regularly and i found the staff to be very helpful and nice

I find it is cheaper to run around Xujaihui park if you can get past the slow walking locals. The prices some gyms were OTT espcially when only in Shanghai 50% time. Also they were asking full year payment. As you go outside downtown it gets cheaper like Pu Dong but its a trek to get to just to work out, its a work out in it own right.

It is definitely overcrowded there! 1900rmb is OK for a year membership but i think you can try to bargain with the sales people there in Physical and perhaps you can get it down to 1,000 or 1,500 rmb...

I've made it a point to do a lot of marketing research on gyms in the area since I'm opening up my own next month. If you're interested in Mixed Martial Arts, Combat Sports, & Alternative fitness, just click the banner in my sig for more info.

If you're looking for an inexpensive, quality, standard weights & treadmills fitness gym, USA Kingsport Fitness on Wuzhong road has a nice little place. Not a lot of weights or machines, but they're not very busy either. They offer a lot of classes, a hot yoga room, spinning, and a dance studio. The bi-lingual staff is very friendly and accommodating. And the price tag is around 1700 RMB/year.

And nobody's paying me to say that. They were just really cool to me when I dropped by to spy on them, so I figured I'd return the favor.
