Hmmm... Copyright infringement notwithstanding... The 淘宝城 at 850 NanJing West is just a XiangYang wannabe...

True to the spirit of a pirated copy, when compared with the old XiangYang it pales in selection (severely), prices (higher rents), and air quality (as many shopkeepers smoking, but now boxed in)... but it's there and indeed you don't have to travel to Pudong... which I haven't had a chance to check out, but hope to find it more like the old XiangYang... because 850 NJW was really rather disappointing... except maybe for that one corner T-shirt shop...

In the atrium of 850 NJW it has some huge banner about respecting intellectual properties and strictly adhering to copyright laws... good for one of those tourist photo-ops...

I think it's 580 Nanjing Xi Lu... and yes, it's not very extensive.

Let's face it, Xiang Yang is dead and will not be replaced. It has been divided and spead throughout the city in a number of other markets. But nowhere will you get bombarded three blocks away with: "Come my shop! Watches, bags, DVD's. Number B-23, my shop. Cheap. Cheap Best quality." Maybe it's good that it's gone, but I kind of miss the chaos.

Pudong one is huge, good range of goods but you have to ask if you want something specific. Then they open their secret cupboards, or shimmy up their ladders into the loft. Quite amusing really. Also they are bargaining harder but if you're persistent and then walk away they normally come running after you. Still not the atmosphere of the old XY though.

I better discover the closest imitation to XY coz my bosses are coming and they would grill me with the question WHERE THEY ARE... the watches, they love the watches, en also the T-shirt but Pudong is a bit too far. Last time I took them to Qipu, I got myself dizzy inside the market. I once walked from Jingan si to People sq, along Nanjing rd, I couldnt see anything. I need to open my eyes wider, hmm...

To be honest, I do miss XY market. No matter how much I disliked the mad crowd in front of the market... isnt it sad to see the site was abandoned like an old cemetery?? uhm.. I am dramatizing the lost..

I agree Science and Technology is much better than Nanjing. The quality of the stuff is better and there's more choice. You can also pick up a few bargains along Shimen no. 1. The prices there a little lower than at Science and Technology.

Today I went in that shop at Pudong Nan Lu, near Times Square...
It reminds me XY, but smaller and cleaner.
The prices were very good, less than XY, and they have a huge selection of DVDs

Well - I haven't been to the Pudong market, I've seen some stalls in the Science and Technology musem metro station, but not very big.

One market is the 3 floor market, the "Shanghai Long Hua Clothing Gift market" at 2465 Long Hua Lu - nearest cross street is Wanping Lu, feels very similar to XY, but still quite quiet, which sort of makes the sellers even more keen for you to buy !

Other place is Cheepo Lu (spelling ?) which is a 5 minute walk north from what used to be Middle Henan metro on line 2 (I think it is Nanjing East station now), go over Suzhou Creek and it is about another 300 meters, very big area, and cheapest I think - mainly locals buying.

Hope this helps.

You're joking right? The market under the S&T Museum/in the metro station is vast, there are hundreds of stalls - you're obviously not looking in the right place. I know there are a few stalls outside the main market - try going in the other direction.

The Science & Technolgy museum stop is on #2 line 5 stops from People's SQ and before Century Pk stop. This market is huge with many vendors and you can bargain and get good buys.

Nanjing road 580 with Chengdu road. i was there already and i agree that it doesn't have a huge selection.

I think it's 580... 3 floor, just steps away from the corner of Nanjing Xi rd and Chongqing Bei rd... or it is on Chengdu lu to be precise, anyway it's easy to find. The funny thing is you found more south americans or those latins and Americans than Chinese or others.... seems like they are having good network when it comes to piracy... Wink

Post subject: Pudong mkt vs 580 nanjing xi lu
I had a brain fart today and went looking for the new xiangyang mkt at Zhangjiang High Tech Park subway stop. Asked 4 people; they had no idea. Heard it might be at Longyang subway stop; nope. Finally asked a friend who informed me it's at the Sci &Tech MUSEUM stop; success! ai ya 哎呀。。。

I live 5 min walk from the 'fake' market at 580 nanjing xi lu X chengdu bei lu, so i've been going there a lot. This one in PuDong is really much better; much more variety. The head honcho there said that pretty soon all the shops at 580 nanjing xi lu will move to the PuDong site. Good call since business was bad.

Definitely worth checking out. Also hit up the donair kebab place, 38rmb Smile

Is that where the little Turkish(?) restaurant with the great doner (sp?) wraps moved to? The one with the orange sign that was right outside of the Xiang Yang market? I went looking for it a while back and it was gone - I was so bummed! I used to stop by there on my way out of Xiang Yang and get one of those yummy wraps. But I think they were really cheap -- like only 10 RMB? Myabe 15 with the yogurt sauce?

Does anyone know where they moved to?

Okay, I was close. it is Jianhe Lu, which is the next street after Hong Mei Lu. The cross is Yanan Lu, and it is on the South Side. It has been there for around 2 months, so probably formed by some of the XYM vendors.

Cacky, I own and operate Bubba's Texas-style Bar-B-Que.

Okay so these are the markeds?
1. 850 Nan Jing West 3rd floor
2. Science Tech Museum Metro station (Where do I go when I get off the Metro? )
3. 1271 Pudong Nan LU (Can I Find this easy?)

(and a Movie Star at Da Gu Lu Shi men Lu.

Anywhere else I need to go or anything else I need to know to find them?
iara - Jan 26, 2007 - 08:07 AM

The science Tech Museum market is easy to find: instead of going to the museum direction, you go the other way.If you see KFC or Latina just avoid them and take the metro direction, you will land in the market.
The RongFu Market, Pudong Nan Lu: if you know Babaiban (Next Age), cross the street in direction of Times Squares,You will see the MCDonalds, avoid this too and in the back, just cross the road, you will end in the market (there is a big banner RONGFU...) with plasctic curtains in the door.Go upstairs. There's a lot of movies there, in the 3rd floor, 5 kuai each.
For me, the second one is better, not so big than the 1rst, but has the old XY style, with vendors running after you...And the prices are better too!

The correct address

580 Nanjing Xi Lu (corner of Chengdu Nanjing Lu and Chengdu Lu). Not only 3rd floor, the whole building
