Relocation and Moving - Pudong or Puxi ?

bright_tone - June 19, 2007 - 02:47 PM
Post subject: Pudong or Puxi ?
Hi,
just need a few feedback before deciding to live in Pudong or Puxi. I got to work on both side of the city. One at Zhang Jiang and one at Jing An area.

Would like to live in the area little more quiet and along metro line 2. Any advise ? I already saw both location at both side, very convenient along metro line. Now just final decision on east or west.

Thanks in advance

Kids and family, Pudong! No kids, restaurants and nightlife, Puxi!! As for quiet, the honking has been reduced significantly since the new law was passed!!!

Good to have less noise pollution.

Any reason Zhangjiang is good ?

u can get a 160 sq m 3 storey townhouse in zhangjiang's tomson for cny8000 (offer). i think for cny3000 u can get a 100 sq m apartment near the subway station. century park is no doubt nice but there is pollution and also it is much more expensive than zhangjiang!

how much is the bond?
mrpango - June 19, 2007 - 04:12 PM
Post subject:
There are two ways of being charged the deposit: Either its 1 month's rent as deposit, followed by rent paid every 3 months, or 3 months rent as deposit and pay every month

I live in the Century Park area, (not in a flashy big apartment complex though - we don't even have a lift), and we paid 1 month's rent as deposit, and pay quarterly.

I'm a horrendous Puxi snob- living in Jing-An as opposed to some soulless community on the 'dark side' adds about 20 mins travel time onto my commute, but there's no way I'd live East of the river.

Our situation is the same as mrpango's: liftless, nondescript apartment in Century Park, 5 minutes to the subway, 1 month deposit + quarterly rent. Huamu is a quaint little community, within striking distance of Carrefour and a bus ride away from both the Dongchang Rd commercial area and Lujiazui.

Still, we're moving back to Puxi when our kid gets a little older.

It's hard for me to fathom why anybody would live in Zhangjiang, and even more why the pollution would be worse in Century Park. When I ride the bus home past the giant fabs and factories in Zhangjiang I see steam (mixed with who-knows-what) rising from the sewer grates along the road, and occasionally pass through clouds of god-awful smells along well-traveled Guoshoujing Rd.

My family (wife and 2 kids under 2) and I are moving to SH in Sept. We have read everything we can find (including lots on this site) on where to live and we visited for a few days to check out some places and we still can't decide on the big pudong vs. puxi question.

The general answer is: you like your kids, live in pudong; you like restaurants and interesting places etc. live in puxi.
Well what if you like both? Are we choosing between making ourselves happy and our kids happy? Granted we'll probably all be fine either place but I'd like to make the "best" decision anyway.

So what I want are the counterexamples: Who lives in Puxi (we're looking in the XinTianDi area, where my office is) with their kids and loves it? Maybe near a great park with lots of other kids around? Great kindergarten nearby?

Who lives in Pudong (we're looking at Lujiazui or maybe Century Park) and still enjoys everything Puxi has to offer? And just how long is the commute from those areas using Metro, to XinTianDi area (requiring transfer at People's Square)?

Can it be done???

I think the case could be made for living in Puxi with kids but it'd be hard to live in Pudong and still take full advantage of what Puxi has to offer. I intend to raise my kids in Puxi, and I think yu888 would back me up on that (even though we're both still pretty new dads).

I lived in Puxi when I first arrived in Shanghai - I'm single (well, engaged) but not with any kids naturally. Moved to Pudong shortly after because I didn't like the noise, and also the non-fresh air. Couldn't get a good night's sleep in Puxi.

I work in the Puxi area, so when I finish work and head back to the apartment at night, it really feels like going 'home'. Fresher air, calm and peaceful, and a really good night's sleep. For the occasional night-trip in town, taxi costs 40 RMB back home so its not so bad Smile

mrpango - June 20, 2007 - 11:41 AM

1 bed apartments are usually priced a bit higher as they are quite in demand. My fiancee found quite a few nice places (in the modern complexes) for around 2500-3000 RMB per month.

In our place, its just a local residence area, so costs only 2000. I have heard there are even cheaper prices around 1700-1800 RMB per month in similar buildings.

- this is around 5 mins walk away from either long yang road / century park metro stations

Would you say the difference (between Puxi and Pudong) is like that of Manhattan metro vs. Long Island suburbia?
koalaki - June 20, 2007 - 12:01 PM

Pudong is definitely better. Reason being: less pollution, shopping is as easy as in puxi. If you look at Shanghai map, the distance from downtown (xintiandi) to Century Ave Metro station is actually less than the distance from downtown to some of the parts in puxi, of coz same goes for the travelling time.

Therefore, consider puxi if u wanna get trapped in the endless traffic jam.

Personally, I think that if your office is in the Xin Tian Di area then you should be on the Puxi side. Xin Tian Di is on metro line one so if you lived in Pudong you would have to get a taxi to People's Square subway, take a train to Pudong then get a taxi home.

You will find that you work inordinarily long hours here compared to back home so a quick commute home is ideal.

There is a kindergarten at Sommerset Grand which is close to Xin Tian Di and there is a park and lake there too.

There are a number of expatriate apartments in that area that have families so your kids would have friends to play with. There's also a good City Shopper foreign goods supermarket in the basement in Times Square so shopping is handy too.

Hope this helps.........but in the end it's your choice:)

We're moving in August to Shanghai and this has been an area we're still deep in research. I think though we're leaning more towards the Puxi area. We're moving from central Toronto--for those who know it's the St. Clair/Dufferin area--which is not quite downtown however a 10 minute walk down the street and we'll be downtown. We love our neighbourhood for the "classic Toronto" feel--We just have to turn the corner and we have well over 20 family owned mulit-cultural restaurants that cater to anything our taste buds desire. We also love that there are schools around us, parks galore and the neighbourhoods are settled. I was working out in the 'burbs' of Toronto and my partner was working downtown yet we chose not to live in the burbs--and this for me is what Pudong seems like--that urban sprawl that is Mississauga or Markham. Manufactured neighbourhoods. I think Puxi appears more settled, diverse and while it is 'dirtier' it's Shanghai. We also have a child and I cant help but feel I would be letting her down if I was to live in the 'burbs'.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this is how I see it--I suppose we'll find out if our feelings are the same when we actually arrive.

Really have a think before u settle down in Century Park. Sure, it is a nice and fairly clean and quiet area, close to Carrefour and quite convenient.. But it is also very far from things! I lived there for 6 months, and enjoyed it OK, but in the end I was so fed up with catching the metro and doing that annoying change at (always crowded) people square, as well as having to pay an expensive taxi ride every time I missed the last metro home.
I find Puxi to be more enjoyable in terms of things going on, and living at Century park proved to be annoying a lot of times when someone called and asked if I wanted to grab a quick bite somewhere (like in the french concession), and I knew it would take me maybe 45 min to get there, and then 45 min home.... I moved after 6 months and now live in the french concession, which I like so much better! I don't find the FC noisy or overwhelming. Pollution is everywhere, and I can still go and visit Pudong when I have an errand there. But overall I find life on the west side more convenient.

My take on this is just this: I am in Pudong right now (Century Park) and it just feels like another concrete jungle. Can't wait 2 shift 2 Puxi (although my office is in Pudong). If u r a people person and love 2 live in a place like the locals-its Puxi els Pudong.
Anyways, with the amount of smoking i indulge in, pollution in Puxi would seem like a natural draft of fresh air Laughing

Hypothetical scenario:
Single straight male; early 40s; likely relocating from a major northeast US city; currently would not live in the 'burbs in the States; office will be on Dongfang Road in Pudong (or in Singapore?); won't party as I would have 10-15 years ago, but will definitely look for a variety of restaurants (quality and multi-ethnic diversity, not including Pizza Hut) and likely have a few drinks a night or so a week (clients or friends); still I work hard and will appreciate getting a decent night's sleep weeknights...love my nieces and nephews yet wouldn't love it if they (or especially someone else's kids) woke me early on weekend morning...

To Pudong, or to Puxi? Why?

Alternatively, to Shanghai, or to Singapore?

Thanks for any insightful thoughts.

Safe, clean, quiet, controlled. (I got a ticket for not having a license for mr car radio)
Good food, excellent infrastructure, english speaking taxi's

Shanghai
- Think food fight in the elementary school lunchroom
Noise, pollution, mayhem, little process...
Still good food, nightlife.

I lived in Singapore for three years. Shanghai (Puxi) now for a little over two.

Depends on your temperment. If you want to live in Disneyworld, live in Singapore. If you want to live in Asia, live in Shanghai.

Just for appointments or anytime you are taking kids anywhere as yours are quite small, it could be a problem. Not for your kids acting up, but rather the haphazard approach many taxi drivers have here. My youngest has "only" smacked his head off of the partion once and have had to tell drivers more than once to cool it!! I have talked with other couples that because of concerns in transporting "small/infant" children and lack of seatbelts in taxis, that their employers "HAVE" made concessions in providing a vehicle on a part-time basis in these cases.

If you are able to find a good Ayi so everyday tasks like shopping, groceries can be deligated to her or if Ayi can watch the two kids while your spouse handles without kids in tow would be much easier.

I take it you have reviewed a number of the what to bring threads and know to bring lots of OTC medications that the young ones would need while you are in Shanghai, those things are very hard to locate, and having a small box in your closet will have your mind at ease and promise you will come in handy at somepoint!!

Jinqiao which is in Pudong is like a paradise. I've been to both worlds. Puxi and Pudong. My advice is move to Puxi first. Eventually you are gonna party out, get tired of the noise and enless crowds, super long bank lines and then long for Pudong. It happens to eveyone. You can easily get to parties and events with 100 Yuan round trip from here.

Jinqiao is just fabulous. Clean air and TREES, GRASS and the people in Jinqiao seem nicer. No one is arguing or fighting. During the day you have all the markets to yourself. The "Flying Fox" with out dirtiness of Puxi. I'm pretty sure that Jinqiao is the future. Also its an expat community so most people speak english if you ever just get tired of speaking Chinese.

Super Brand Mall has added a Blue Frog and a Hooters in the last year.
Early next year when the new Shanghai Financial building opens, there should be a few more upscale restaurants to choose from, there is also a new HOng KOng Plaze being built next to it (between it and Super Brand Mall), so food choices and congestion should climb dramatically.
2 blocks behind BaBaiBan is a new food Mall, 5 floors of mostly Asian cuisine, and a cigar/wine bar. The Korean restaurant on the top floor is nice.

Bad news for Puxi: I saw yesterday that Papa Schnitzel has closed down. It was 2~3 blocks behind PLaza66, with nice garden seating.

Overhead bridges, traffic congestions, and construction sites, Puxi isn't my cup of tea, and I realized choosing Pudong over Puxi was a right decision. I've lived in Pudong (Ba Bai Ban area & Century Park) for the last 14 months... looking at the Puxi side with great interest, but with big reservations as well. I like the clean air over here and the 'smaller' crowds.

Really looking at the move in terms of what do I stand to benefit by moving to Puxi that I currently lack....

And, what do I stand to sacrifice (trade off) for the conveniences.

Hmmmmmmm and the debate rages on.

Puxi is a lot less dirty and crowded when you live here and know where you're going (and how to get there).

If you're going to live in Shanghai, then live in Shanghai- not some suburb with a tourist geegaw and a shopping mall full of chain restaurants.

I live and work in Puxi, but am in Pudong to visit our technical center at least once a week when I am in town. Not a lot of exposure, but IMHO....

2 years ago Pudong was a clean quiet alternative to Puxi.....
Now? Not so sure. My sense is that a lot of the pollution is vehicle related, and as of late I do not see much of a difference in the traffic on either side of the river....unless you are way out in the sticks.

I am with Swiss James on this one....Live in Shanghai, Live in Puxi.

20 minutes walk from my place, I can go anywhere from extremely local noodle shop, to a high end laowai, shop in the wet market and LianHua, or buy my vittles at City Market.

It is pretty simple. If you value going out several nights a week then live in Puxi (especially if you work there).

If you hate a long commute and work in Pudong then live in Pudong.

If they're teenagers, do them a favor and live near their school.

My office is in Puxi (Nanjing Xi Lu) not far from the Shanghai Centre, Portman, Malones, etc, but I chose to live in Pudong Lujiazhui for the following reasons:

- I have a a view of the river, Jinmao, Pearl Tower, ...

- I can step out of my apartment and walk around the area without being overwhelmed by a mass of humanity. (I was born and raised in blue sky country.) It is nice to go over and have a walk beside the river.

- The air is less polluted in Pudong judging by my experiences at leaving a window open in the office and leaving a window open at home.

- The drive to work takes only 16 to 25 minutes and home takes 25 to 35 minutes.

- City Supermarket and Lotus (Superbrand Mall) are within walking distance, along with a heap of bars, restaurants, and cafes beside the river.

- There are many expats living in the same area.

I think there a jealous girl behind this

Puxi is not only about party.

about 5 min walk around my place, i got:

3 massages place ("clean" ones)
2 banks
1 huge building with Carrefour, pizza hutt, various stors and so on
Subway Line 2,3,4

And i surely forgot some...

WOW..... and 5 mins from my place in Jinqiao I have:

2 supermarkets (Carrefour and Pines)
Endless chinese restaurants
The Flying Fox (fab)
5 or 6 massage places (clean)
Post Office and Banks
Specialised Bike Store
Decathlon
Megafit Sports Centre
Shopping Centre with small shops
Bars (with no bar girls pestering us), restaurants (Italian, Japanese, Tapas etc, Pizza Hut (although who goes there!)), coffee shops
Century Park (10 mins)
A line of local shops selling fruit and veg, DVD, pet store etc.

AND safer roads for cycling and walking, cleaner air etc... and I can still get to Puxi cheaply when I want to.

Will never live in Puxi especially having small children - its dirty, polluted, congested and unsafe.. why would I want to do that to them.

If your office was in Pudong (AZIA Center...which I believe would be on Metro Line #2/Lujiazui stop) but you wanted to live in Puxi, would you recommend that you live somewhere close to Metro line #2 and avoid any potential transfers at People's Square?
We were considering the French Concession but that is when I thought I would be at our Puxi office. Can anyone recommend a good neighborhood along Metro line #2 that would keep my commute to a reasonable time?
Thanks!

In terms of cost of living, Jing'an Temple > Zhongshan Park > Songhong Rd. I know the first two are good, I hear the third one is coming along.

I am really confused as to what benefits Pudong can give a family with kids. The only thing I can think of is that 1.) Century Park is very large and quiet; and 2.) the Carrafour at Thumb Plaza (that statue looks like a guy masturbating by the way) is very convenient and pleasant to shop at.

More space to run around (not just in Century park), wider sidewalks for strollers, scooters, etc., and generally less pushing. My kids think the air is cleaner over here and that they get pointed at less on this side of town. We go into Puxi most weekends and they get much more unwanted attention there. We've also enjoyed a lot of the kid-friendly activities on this side of town - ice skating at Super Brand Mall, the Science and Tech Museum, the Aquarium. But I suppose it's not a big deal to come over for that.

I think Pudong is Vanilla Ice Cream and Puxi is Vanilla Chocolate and Strawberry. I like Puxi, but If I had young Children I would live in Pudong.

Now you also have my 2 cents worth

Hi,
I,m the one who posted this question in feb.
We choose to live in Pudong, and we really like it.
Pudong feels more fresh and wider than Puxi. Its so crowded in puxi.
Our children go to school in minhang, its a long trip because of the traffic, about 45 min. , they go out in the weekend in puxi and i dont think its a problem. The subway is great en very quick. When we come home we are happy to find an relaxing place with lots of green and great facilities. (we live in greentown)
