Relocation and Moving - finding an apartment

Post subject: finding an apartment
I've actually never reached out like this, but I'm moving to shanghai like next week to start a job and need help finding a place. The HR staff at the company contacted a real estate agent for me that will be showing me some places when I arrive. My company's office is in huangpu. I want to stay below 4,500rmb per month. Does anybody know of anything that would help me in my quest? Or should I just solely rely on this real estate agent? thanks

Sorry, BONNIE, but craigslist do not have a great following on this forum.
You need to check the authenticity of the listings, and check the photos as being current and genuine. Mostly not!. You can waste a lot of time there.

hotwire: Sometimes your company will not have the best agent for you, and in fact could be the worst, or they may have an "arrangement".
Don't know. For you to find out.
If they agree for you to use others, (and they may not), best to go with 2 or 3 GOOD agents.
I know of a few expats that went with 20-30 agents, and got zip from all of them. (understandably).

Will p.m. you a lovely, honest agent, that will help you, if you need her.

heuuu john, i sent email to your agent Betty but i never get any answer......

@jpk: Sometimes Betty does not reply immediately, as she is searching, and does not have any news. Is this the Chinese way?

I will get right on to it.

You CAN be sure she has searched for you.
You are due to arrive today. Right?

Agreed, she should have replied, just to keep in touch.

bump: Also @jpk. Have put a bomb under Betty.
She has been looking, but nothing at this stage.

Do you have a preferred area?

Your budget is not high, so anywhere downtown may be a little too much.
If you can tell her where your work is, it will help.

You can get good value in places like Xujiahui and Xuhui, and be handy to metro, but if your work was deep in Pudong, would not be much help. (for instance)

Betty does not seem to have your phone number.
I have given her your email address, and she should write about NOW.

Hope this helps.

@ Monalisalee. There is dearth of good low budget apartments because they are in such high demand due to the fallout from the GFC. It seems there are lots of folk coming here without a job as China's economy is doing better than most others and you can live here cheaply and give it a go. You know the pull ...... ONE POINT FOUR BILLION market. (cough, cough.....)

It seems alot of the good ones are snapped up quickly and the only cheap ones avail are really YUK or in poor locations. In the next few months there will be more coming online as this is the typical period that folk move July/August.

Yes, Adrienne, seems you are right. Anything decent is snapped up faster than you can blink.
Think Betty is having a little trouble with this one. The budget is up to 4000 for 2 beds, so is doable, but she just does not want to deal with YUK ones.

Yes, seems the economy is poised to lead the others out of the gloom. Hope so.
I DO know I can live on less than half what it would be back in LIL' OL' N.Z.
(And thats 2 of us) Very Happy

Can you explain what is YUK?
Thanks
monalisalee - July 04, 2009 - 05:57 PM
Post subject:
Yuk is short for Yukky, or can be spelt Yucky.

I thought it may be an Australasian word, but apparently English derived.
Yuk, and Yukky are commonly used in Australia and New Zealand.

Means: Repugnant, Distasteful, Unpleasant, Disagreeable, or just plain Dirty.

I will ge giving Betty and Adrianne a call in August (since I will be ready to move out by the end of Aug).

Ha ha, Pretty much describes Shanghai too. Nah, I didn't say that. Love it here.
There is also Yukmouth, which is someone who badmouths people or anything else.

What is your budget?
Adrienne generally does rentals over 10,000, while Betty does under that, sometimes much less, but not into the YUK area.

Both will find you the best deals available, and help in many other ways as well.

Oh. Am so sorry. That’s my Aussie slang creeping in there.

Yes, as Monalisalee rightly pointed out, Yuk is a term that means Repugnant, Distasteful, Unpleasant, Disagreeable, or just plain Dirty

My slang dictionary has: YUK - An exclamation of disgust. Other words would be bad, poor, sucks, common, generally displeasing.

I actually don’t think there are words to describe some of the really, really, really Yuky properties in the lower end and indeed some in the mid-higher end. I think I can speak with a certain amount of authority on this subject, being rich in China sure don’t equate to being stylish.

Given the GFC and the difficulties many are having, we now have added properties ranging from 7,000rmb to our database.

Between Betty and ourselves I am sure we can help you find a not so Yuky place.

Cheers,

Adrienne
