Post subject: weeknights in pudong?

Hi everyone, just joined here and only got to shanghai a few weeks ago so fairly new..

Having lots of fun at the weekends heading to puxi with colleagues, but getting a bit bored of the whole 'living for the weekend' thing and want to have some midweek fun too.. Very Happy

but living and working in pudong makes it quite difficult - by the time we finish work its a bit late to head over to puxi in time to get back by 2ish. and can't move flat - company provides accoms and couldnt afford it otherwise! O.o

so just wondering if there is ever any after-work type stuff going on round here (esp lujiazui area).. a little disappointed so far, when i imagined financial district, i kinda expected it to be like london's canary wharf: not somehwere you'd wanna go clubbing at the weekend, but plenty of trendy after-work watering holes. also haven't seen any young professionals, seems like all families here!

nothing much going on in pudong.

u seem to work late hours. in any case, lujiazui to XTD in puxi is no more than 15 mins on a cab, it should not matter all that much.

Isn't there a ladies night thing on Wednesdays at the bar up in the SWFC that's pretty popular, or something? I haven't made it there yet myself but I have heard tell. Also the bar down at Y's table in the basement looks nice, but I've only been there during the daytime for lunch, not sure what the cocktail hour scene is like.

But yeah, there's a general dearth of bars around this part of town.

Yeah the bar in the Hyatt has ladies night on Wedneday and that's pretty popular plus the view from the 92nd floor is pretty spectacular, good martinis and champagne for the chicks. Plus the blue frog near Superbrand mall is always good for an after work drink.

But yeah it takes me about 10 or 15 minutes to get to XTD from LJZ through the Fuxing tunnel for a bigger choice of things to do.

Oh and I almost forgot my new favourite bar... The Office, on Pudong Avenue.

Come on Carsten, that's worth a Sambuca....

lol had plenty of sambuca last night again Smile

but yes stephhh we just opened a new place on pudong avenue 968 close to yuanshen road which is really a nice spot, mondays ladies night and of course with nice after work specials daily and very nice food as well, check us out

ahh yeap will have to try out swfc - love love love bars in the sky!! thanks for all the suggestions everyone.. though think we are gonna head to puxi tomorrow Wink

maybe will try swfc next wed then!

you all in pudong yourselves as well?

I am moving out to Pudong on Jan 2nd and shall most definitely be looking for some cool places to go on the weeknights.. Am in London at the minute but would be great to get in contact and seek out some cool bars if you will still be out there? PM me if you would rather!

That is what the Edit Function is for.

As in regards to go out in Pudong. SWFC has also a decent bar in B1 run by the same guys as The kitchen. Not too sure when or if they have a ladies night. But usually there is a few people hanging around too. The bar on the upper levels as mentioned before is not too bad neither.

Grand Hyatt next Door also has a Bar on the 87th Floor, Cloud 9. But nothing to write home about.

There is also Jade on36 at the Shanghri La - but not too sure how things are there. Have not been in a while. Awesome views though.

If you just look for a place to have a few cheap drinks after work you can always try Max Bar. But be warned, it is what it is. It is on Weifang Lu & Pucheng Lu, right opposite Shimao Riveria. Lots of expats hanging out there that live in the area. Loud Chinese band after 9pm. Food is ok but nothing special, drinks are cheap and usually a fun atmosphere. But really nothing fancy.

I was there last week, it was just how I described. Max Bar is more of sports bar.

If you chicks can watch other people paint their neighbor's kitchen for hours on end, or movies with Judith Light and Tracy Gold, then we can watch balls getting tossed around.

I don't know who those people are, or why anyone would watch anyone paint anything other than... erm... paintings.

I just wish there was a good place to hang out around here, that wasn't annoying and/or too expensive. Someplace a bit funky and artsy without being up its own arse would be great, but I'll settle for just plain old 'comfortable'. You know, just a bar. Am I asking too much?

Other than the people eating food, I've always thought the Elelement Fresh at LJZ (in the super brand mall) is a really nice spot.

Great view from the terrace, although I guess it's getting a bit cold for that, and good cocktails.

Stephhh - Yes.. I am from London.. Does that mean you are too? And yeah - guess it does seem like planning ahead but just dont want to get out there and spend the first three weeks wondering what to do with myself and snivelling into a pint of Baileys! Have had some great girls nights here and want to continue the tradition out there.. I will be teaching drama at an International School in Pudong so will be living in the Cambridge New Forest (??) area I believe.. Some of the bars suggested sound pretty cool.. How long are you going to be around Shanghai for? dontknow

it seems that really quite less nice clubs in pudong area than in puxi... ppl usually go karaoke after dinner in pudong... The night life here is not mature enough.

Hi all,

You have the same question as me. I came to shanghai in September and have started to settle in these past weeks. Now I find myself bored after work. My problem is I live in Pudong, near Century Avenue and don't know where to go to have a good time and meet people. All of the people where I work are Chinese, and content to just work for 10 hours, go home, eat, sleep and repeat. I need a little more to keep my sanity. What do you people suggest?
